"Taking your cash and giving you trash" -- That should be the motto of Overstock.com. After making one, relatively low-dollar purchase from this waste-disposal outfit, I am left shaking my head and wondering how any company can stay in business by selling garbage to its customers.
My experience started after ordering a new printer for my son's birthday, when I realized that I needed a USB connection for his somewhat dated PC. I found just what I needed on Overstock.com -- a PC card with FIVE (count 'em!) USB ports for a very good price! Perfect! Or so I thought.
I placed the order and it arrived in half a week. But the card I received had only four USB ports, not five. "Oh well, I can live with four," I thought. So I went ahead and installed the card, then the software. Then I reinstalled the software. And installed it again. And installed it again. Each time, I got a message indicating that only three of the four hubs were functional.
Now I was starting to get upset. I paid for five ports, received four, but only three were working? What kind of garbage are these people selling?
I called Overstock.com and they said I could return the card. Since I claimed it was defective merchandise, however, I would have to wait until their people checked the item to verify the problem -- a process that could take weeks. Meanwhile, my son's new printer would sit there collecting dust while a bunch of scoundrels assessed my honesty.
I decided to go ahead and keep the card with three functioning USB ports. But when I plugged in the printer and attempted to install the printer software, it would not load completely. So I tried plugging the printer into a different USB port. Same result. I uninstalled the software and rebooted again. Same result again!
I was out of patience and was about to uninstall the card and send it back, but I decided to try a third USB port. Incredibly, it worked!
So are you with me now? I paid for five ports and received four. One of the four would not work with the supplied software, and two of the four would not work when a USB cable was plugged into it.
I would have gladly spent an extra couple of dollars rather than endure all the frustration that resulted from what should have been a very simple purchase. Buying from merchandise liquidators can be a crap shoot -- but in my case, Overstock.com delivered just plain crap.
