The Bottom Line Don't send dishonest email to members just to generate more hits on your opinions.
Being fairly new to epinions, I was really excited when I received an email from a fellow member saying he really liked my work and he wished that I would check out some of his. However, after looking him up, I found that many of his articles had 150+ hits. This seemed strange to me because he was a new member with hardly no web of trust. I clicked on the comments section of one of his articles and learned that many people were leaving harsh comments about him being dishonest. I put two & two together and realized that he had randomly selected members, gotten their email, and mailed everyone a generic letter saying "I've read some of your opinions and like your work. I would appreciate your advice or comments about mine." After going back through all of my articles, I found that he had not rated any of my opinions, thus, he probably hadn't read them. After doing more research, I found that he had written more than 100 opinions in only a few days time. I'm not accusing anyone of plagiarizing, but that is almost impossible. On top of all that, one of his opinions was about being dishonest on Epinions. I want everyone to be aware of this behavior in case this happens to you. If you get an email from a member, please check it out before you fall into this web of deceit. I honestly thought that this person was interested in my opinions when all he was really doing was trying to generate lots of hits for himself. I don't discourage members from emailing other members about something they've written on epinions, but please be honest, and don't just email members to try to get hits. You will eventually be found out and people don't take dishonesty lightly on this site.  |
