A Love/Hate Relationship: Cloth Diapers and Me

The Bottom Line I prefer cloth diapers. They are soft, breathable, and inexpensive. Nonetheless, they take more work and a strong stomach.

I hate cloth diapers! I love cloth diapers! I have been using cloths for four straight years. I can not tell you how many baby poops I have seen go down my toilet. It seems like a landfill. When I catch the scent of a new poopie, I cringe inside. For I know once again I have to get a little too personal with my toilet. Don't get me wrong. The benefits of cloth diapers are numerous. But that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it, does it?

SOFTNESS FACTOR

I know when I put a cloth diaper on my babies; they get to enjoy the softness of 100% cotton. There are many diapers that need to be changed in the day. I am comforted with the knowledge that their bottoms are wrapped in a smooth material that breathes. It’s like being wrapped in your dad’s favorite T-shirt.

BREATHABILITY

Cloth breathes. Because oxygen reaches inside the diaper, there is less heat produced. After I take a disposable diaper off of my son, his little private parts look red. I understand that it is important for this part of a male’s body to stay cool. In a cloth diaper, there is not nearly as much heat. I rarely notice the redness in my son after a cloth diaper change.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND

I won’t go into too many details about the benefits to the environment with cloth diaper usage. But, we all know less trash in our landfills is advantageous. There is also less garbage for you do deal with. Not to mention, your local garbage person will appreciate the reduction of diaper stench.

THE NATURAL CHOICE

Cloth diapers do not have any added chemicals. Disposable diapers usually contain dyes, chemical absorbents, and perfumes. I personally prefer to limit the amount of chemicals in my baby’ s lives. Cotton is naturally absorbent. I don’t mind the stains on my diapers. But if stains bother you, bleach works well and when used in moderation is not harmful to the babes.

ECONOMICAL

Using cloth diapers is light on the pocket book. If you are buying new, a substantial supply of diapers and diaper covers will cost you from $300-$400. This amount should last three years. This may seem costly. But compare this to $1800.00 for three years of disposables ($50.00 a month X 3 years), and you can see the savings.

SOME CRITICAL COMMENTS

I confess I periodically use disposable diapers. They are so easy! How nice it is to change a diaper without having to clean and fold it before I use it again. Disposable diapers hold a lot more liquid and they do not leak. So, you have to change less diapers and clothes. Disposables tend to be less bulky. They also take up less space in the house. Disposable diapers are great for traveling too. There is nothing worse than packing dirty diapers in the compact space of a car.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

Why use cloth diapers over disposable diapers? First and foremost, they are soft and comfortable. They breathe, so your babies may have less diaper rashes. There is less trash for you and your local landfill. Cloth diapers are more work, but they will cost you less in the long run. Cloth diapers are free of chemicals, dyes and perfumes. I have a hard time with cloth diapers. Sometimes I hate them. But, I love the advantages more. So, I stick with cloth.
