Can you make money?

The Bottom Line Pick one that doesn't require constant "surfing". Make sure they pay in dollar amounts, not points or percents.

This epinion focuses only on pay-to-surf sites. There are many other types of "money making" (hahaha) sites out there besides pay-to-surf: pay per referral, e-mail reading, start pages, sign up for junk, just to name a few.

Pay-to-surf
A pay-to-surf service consists of you running an ad bar (or viewbar) while you are on the computer and online. There are a few different types of these ad bars.

1)Pay-to-surf and only to surf.
These are the ad bars that only earn you money when you have an internet browser open and are actively using this browser by moving your mouse, clicking, etc. These viewbars aren't bad, but don't plan on making lots of money unless you are actively surfing a whole lot. Usually these bars give you a 30second to 2 minute time window between clicks. Even at 2 minutes, you will have the bar shut off on you often - reading articles, checking email, writing epinions are all "active surfing" activities that take more than 2 minutes between click.
Example - AllAdvantage.

2)Pay-to-surf and click on the adbar.
This is exactly the same as a pure pay-to-surf bar, except that you must interact with the ad bar, or it will shut off on you. Avoid these services like the plague. Usually their adbars are very buggy and will randomly shut off on you. And sometimes, the adbar will not restart no matter how many times you click the ads.
Example - Cash Fiesta.

3)Pay to view ads / pay to be on the computer.
This is an adbar that earns you points/money as long as you are actively using the computer. Of course, actively using the computer is not defined as typing a term paper for 3 hours, but instead clicking and moving the mouse at least once every couple minutes. Some of these services will also pop up adds in browser windows when you don't click for awhile. These are definitely the best pay-to-surf services.
Example - Desktop Dollars (has the pop-ups) and UniqueSurf (no pop-ups & $.70/hr! , but they haven't started paying out yet).

Getting paid
Always sign up for a service that pays you a fixed dollar amount instead of paying you a percentage of their "earnings". A service paying a percentage is unreliable at best, because they may not sell enough ads in a certain month, leaving you with the 300 hours you surfed only making you $.04/hr.

Some of these percentage services disguise that you aren't guaranteed a certain rate by awarding you points instead of dollars. Don't be fooled, usually it takes 1000's of points to make just $1.

Referrals
Referrals are a good way of making more money without having to surf for 12 hours a day. They are also a good way to tick off your friends when they start getting spammed and are only making $5 a month. For referrals to be helpful, you need to have a lot of them. They entail getting your friends (or random people who don't care that you are spamming them by asking) to sign up for the pay-to-surf service. You will be paid a certain dollar or percent rate for every hour that your friend uses the adbar. Because the service does not require you to refer people, it is not a pyramid scheme.

Recap
Pick a pay-to-be-on-the-computer service whose adbar does not require that you click on ads. Make sure that they pay a specified dollar amount instead of awarding points or percentages. A good rate is $.50 and up.

My picks: at the moment, none, but check out UniqueSurf, the rates are good and you don't have to download anything to use the adbar.

Avoid: Utopiad, Speedia, CashSurfers - all guilty of giving you points which are almost worthless.

Could go either way: AllAdvantage - they pay ok, but it's strictly pay-to-surf so you gotta get loads of referrals. Desktop Dollars - they pay a percentage, but supposedly it's better than the rest.
