Hard Water!
We had our water tested for hardness, and it was off the scale! Needless to say, we have VERY hard water, and it makes cleaning a very challenging job. Not only do I have to deal with the usual soap scum on bath tubs and shower doors, but the scale build up from hard water is even more of a problem.
Which Product to Choose?
Believe me when I say I have tried just about everything available on the supermarket shelves, as well as items from mail order and television promos. Over the years I have been so disappointed with products failure to perform as the manufacturer stated, that I really wondered if there was anything out there that would actually remove hard water stains - AND not harm our new septic system.
Enter Kaboom
Kaboom is made by the "Orange Glo" company. I had previously tried an orange cleaner of theirs and was very happy with it, so when I saw a 32 ounce bottle of Kaboom at Costco (for a fraction of what it sells for other places) I snatched it up in a heartbeat.
About Kaboom
When reading the label, Kaboom sounds like a miracle product! It claims to remove:
Mineral Deposits
Hard Water Stains
Iron
Soil Stains
Soap Scum
Rust
Scale & Lime Stains
Kaboom can be used on:
Glass & Plastic Shower Doors
Toilets & Sinks
Ceramic
Brass
Grouting
Bathroom Fixtures
Fiberglass
Chrome
Stainless Steel
Boats
Tubs & Shower Stalls
Concrete
Copper
Floor & Wall Tile
AND it's safe for septic systems!
When Kaboom is sprayed, it shoots out a thick foamy white substance that clings to the surface of what you are cleaning. This makes cleaning shower walls and doors much easier, without the scrubbing I might add!
The only surface Kaboom has not worked well on is my brass bathroom faucets. It just does not clean them or make them shiny like it does the chrome.
The Proof is in the Pudding!
Our chrome faucets get really gunked up with hard water scale, and I was simply amazed to see the job that Kaboom did on them. I sprayed Kaboom, let it sit a few minutes, and rinsed it off - I didn't even scrub. Walla! The chrome was shiny! There was still some water stains that remained, so another treatment was necessary to remove it all.
It works as well on shower doors, soap scum, and porcelain. The only area that Kaboom didn't meet my expectations was on our shower tile grout. The only product that I have found to whiten the grout is bleach. I really don't like using bleach, but it does work.
Safety of Kaboom
While some manufacturers tell you to use safety gloves while using their products, Kaboom states to use gloves :if you have sensitive skin". They do caution the user to work in a well ventilated room, and not to mix Kaboom with bleach, or any other household chemicals. There is a warning to keep out of the reach of children and pets.
While Kaboom has a more pleasant smell than many other cleaners I've used (it has an orangy odor), I heed the warnings with this product. The caution does say "harmful if swallowed", so please keep this up high and out of the reach of children!
Availability
Since I purchased Kaboom at Costco, I have found it in many of our local drug and grocery stores. It is under $5 a bottle.
