Ranger Safaris great experience Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro (Reply to this comment)
by windblown
We had an amazing experience with Ranger Safaris. We were met at the airport and brought to the Arusha Coffee Lodge. A member of our party forgot a piece of luggage and the lead tour guide retrieved it. The next day, we got into our vehicles. Our group needed 7 vehicles. Our driver was knowledgeable, professional and pleasant. Among our 7 vehicles, we had 2 flat tires, 2 vehicles that got stuck in holes or the mud and one broken drive shaft. It was all part of the adventure. Our leader called an audible and brought us to Lake Ndutu so we could see flamingos; he knew the ones that usually reside in Ngorongoro were elsewhere because it was mating season. He also brought us to the start of the wildebeest migration. Our tour leader and our driver listened to what we wanted to see and made adjustments as needed. I could not have asked for better.

Take a note - we were not dissapointed with Stephen, he was a good driver and we had plenty of water that we Australians do not need. Our trouble was with an overfilled vehicle which had seen many accidents that had only been painted over. The fact that the poor beast would not start is down to Rangers - not the driver. We have previously had two journeys into Kenya and Tanzania and both of these were excellent. That was in the days we lived and kept shop UK. Given that the health stay good we shall take another trip but this time to Kenya. We had no complaint with the Lodges, they wer excellent. Probably some of the trouble was caused by lack of money. I still have a 10000 shilling note in my wallet as a reminder to check the money before leaving. I now know the the note is only worth $.7.60.
I tried to get to an autoteller as we do in Borneo and thailand but the tellers were all out of order - the only thinI got was 10000 sh note which I then thought was a fortune. We jouneyed on to Thailand to shake hand or maybe paws with some tigers. There we had a good time and some pictures with me leading a tiger on a walk like I do with our German Shepherd. Felt a lot better there than in the Ranger car

The places you are going to are fine - indeed a lot better than the wagon we traveled in. The door immidiatly behind the driver was mainly used - it had been badly repaired and was impossible to get out and also to shut effectively. The door flew open on a strech of road where there were no other vehicles. The car had 7 passengers - imagine them getting to the open top for photos - also the shockers were done and we had to ask the driver to turn off the engine for some reasonable shots.
Vehicle should have been on the scraphead instead of carrying 7 persons - beware they only guarantee window space and with the condition of the cars you cannot easily slide them open and therefore have to take pictures from the roof or through the glass - never again from Pulmanns and Rovers Safaris.

We are shortly to go to Tanzania on Travel Collection's Serengeti Safari. Could you let me know what the lodges were like on your safari. We are due to stay at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, Serengeti Seronera Wildlife Lodge and Lake Manyara Hotel. Did you stay at anyo f these lodges?
Many thanks

Very pleasant holiday (Reply to this comment)

I have just returned from a holiday in Tanzania and which was booked through the Travel Collection in the UK, the agents in Tanzania were Ranger Safaris. We were driven from Nairobi to Arusha first and the transit driver was very knowledgeable and helpful, continually pointing out places of interest and wildlife as we went along and stopping whenever requested so the tour could photograph anything they desired. At Arusha we were introduced to our safari driver ( Latif) for our 6 days touring Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Latif was extremely helpful taking us to a cheap shop to purchase water, getting us to a bureau de change when asked etc. He drove fast but safely the whole time and couldn't be blamed for the "african massage" from the roads. He made sure the vehicle was clean every morning for us and was continually helpful, making sure everyone had sufficient water and was ready to move on to the next site. When we wanted to alter the itinerary slightly he sorted everything straight away. It might be the luck of the draw as far as drivers are concerned but based on our experience with Latif and the holiday overall I would have no problem recommending Ranger safaris to anyone.

A number of our friends who traveled with The Rickshaw Travels Arusha were very happy and we now recommend them highly at our talks. Tanzania Photographic Society (TPS) are supposed to be very good. Across Africa is also an excellent company. Play it safe brother or sister when in the wilds.
It is rather strange that you find this after your trip to Tanzania, how does one know that the people @ Ranger Safaris did not put you up to writing this or that you work for them. Their Travel Agent here in India offered us some money after this came up on the web, of course we declined it politely.

Best holiday ever (Reply to this comment)

I read this comment this morning a day after arriving back from our safari in Tanzania with Ranger Safaris and felt compelled to add my comments.
We found Ranger Safaris to be a very professional extremely helpful company to deal with. From the moment we touched down in Kilimanjaro airport we were taken care of over and above any expectations we had of the holiday. Our driver (Elias) was extremely helpful and friendly and went out of his way for our group on many occasions. He was also extremely knowledgeable on both the safari and also whilst driving through the beautiful Tanzanian countryside. We met another group with Ranger Safaris along the way and they were also extremely pleased with their driver and whole experience. We were provided with water daily as part of the safari so there were no problems there. We found the local people we met along the way to be friendly and welcoming and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending a safari with Ranger Safaris in Arusha.
I hope this comment aids anyone considering a safari in Tanzania as it is an amazing experience that I would hope many will get to enjoy.

This review really helped. We were travelling to Tanzania and after reading this review booked with
TPS, they were wonderful. I checked the with some of the guides and it seems that Ranger's have a strong union and the islamic owners in UK do not have a firm control. Most drivers are fine as they depend on tips. But some of them can be difficult.

The best time!! (Reply to this comment)
by sarahkelly
We have just returned from our safari in Tanzania with ranger safaris and we couldn't have had a better time. Again maybe its just luck but our driver/guide (Prosper) was excellent. He constantly looked out for our interests, taking us to supermarkets we wouldn't have known about to get our water at a much cheaper rate than the hotels, taking us to a bureau de change that was competitive, advising us on shops that provided quality goods and suggesting taking photos of the goods we were having shipped home.
We couldn't have asked for more from ranger safaris. We were looked after from start to finish. The roads aren't good in Tanzania and driving at speed is the best way to deal with the terrain or you'll feel every little bump. We felt our driver was safe and in control at all time and always found time to stop and look at anything we wanted to or anything he spotted(and he had the most amazing animal spotting eyes).
Our opinion as a whole of the safari was excellent and we will be writing to our tour agent Voyages Jules Verne to let them know how we felt about Rangers and we'll certainly be recommending them to friends.
Only one word of advice- take a jumper to the Ngorogoro. Its chilly!!

A better experience (Reply to this comment)
by r_andrews
my partner and I have just returned from a 12 night safari in Tanzania with Ranger Safaris and our experience couldn't have been more different. As we used Kuoni as our main agent, they organised our transfer from the airport, so I can't comment on this aspect.
We were taken to the RS depot, and introduced to our guide Hilary. He promptly volunteered to take us to buy water, and took us to a small but clean supermarket where we paid 18 dollars for 24 litres - and as we'd just paid 2 dollars for 1 litre at our overnight stop, we felt we'd done alright.
Hilary made every effort to find out what we were interested in, and to keep us happy. He was a mine of information, and seemed as enthusiastic about the wildlife as we were (although even he might have been a bit bored when we spent nearly an hour watching a rhino). He showed us everything from elephants to tortoises, and even a couple of snakes. He also showed us lots of birds when he found out we were just as interested in them.
Hilary organised everything for us, including early breakfast where needed, and picnic lunches. On a couple of occasions he even suggested changing the itinerary to take a picnic instead of going to the lodge for lunch so that we could see more, which we were only too happy to do.
All our transfers (we stayed at 6 lodges and camps) went smoothly, even the final one to the airstrip, despite being informed early that morning that the flight had been changed from Lobo to Kleins camp at a different time!
All in all, we had a fantastic holiday; perhaps it's just luck with the particular guide, but I wouldn't hesitate to travel with RS again.
