Pros: Quiet location, friendly service, huge suites, roof terrace, cost relative to room size.
Cons: No in house restaurant; not right in the centre of town.
The Bottom Line: I haven't tried other Florence hotels but I would wholeheartedly recommend this one.

| msutherland's Full Review: Palazzo Magnani Feroni Florence |
My wife and I just returned from a week in this hotel in Florence, and I really believe we picked the best hotel. Whilst the Excelsior and the other 5 star hotels in Florence come in with rack rates around 700 Euros, the Palazzo Magnani Feroni comes in at less than half that amount, but the rooms must be over twice the size.
It was the room size that did it for me. I love to have enough space to spread out and hate tiny cramped hotel rooms, especially when they are costing me a fortune. Every room is a suite, with a huge bedroom and living room both with high, high ceilings and furnished with antiques and in some cases, frescoed walls and ceilings. There are very few suites - around 12, I believe - and all are excellent. The hotel website gives excellent details of the rooms.
The location, just south of the Arno, is a little further from the centre than some hotels, but Florence is so small it is still a stone's throw from all major sites. It is particularly well situated for the Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, just 10 minutes walk away, and the Ponte Vecchio, just 15 minutes away.
The hotel is the former residence of the owner, and was sympathetically converted to its current use just a couple of years ago. It is full of the family's old treasures - art, antiques, documents, tapestries, books and sculptures - in both the rooms and the common areas. It has a fabulous roof terrace with excellent views of the city - when we first saw that, we were tempted never to leave the hotel!
The only thing the hotel lacks is an in-house restaurant. Whilst initially seemed strange in a hotel of this quality, they do offer breakfast daily in the lounge room which doubles as a bar at night, and they have a reasonable room service menu, with the food brought in from a nearby restaurant. There are so many excellent restaurants within a short walk, however, that we would not have wanted to eat in the hotel anyway.
Lastly, because the hotel is small, the service is extremely friendly. The front desk girls were extremely helpful with all arrangements and the staff have almost all been working at the hotel since day 1.
