| Cerretani's Full Review: Minolta Magicolor 2300W Laser Printer |
After running to Kinko's twice a week for over a year, I wanted to add a color laser printer to my small office without killing my budget. Minolta's 2300W fits on a desk, prints via USB or parallel port and operates in relative silence compared to previous generation color lasers. Using color laser paper produces crisp output with excellent color saturation. Black text printing is highly readable. First page out with text and a small color logo is around 60 seconds from powersave mode, but that drops to 5 seconds once everything is warmed up. Card stock and label stock get caught up in the winding paper path and come out looking curled - so this printer is best used for standard output. Rebates are often available for this model, reducing the cost by $200 and that makes the 2300W a great small office printer for those looking to print letterhead, color-rich data sets or presentation collateral that rivals copy-center printing.
Windows XP had a difficult time finding this printer when I reconnected it to my laptop, but reinstalling the driver from the Minolta disk fixed that problem. The print monitor is annoying and provides relatively useless information, so I disabled it. Those issues were both quickly resolved and non-recurring, so I can live with them.
You cannot install more memory or a network card in this unit - spend $100 on the 2300L for that option. The printer consumes a lot of power and caused my desk lamp to pulse, forcing my to find another circuit for the printer.
