Good advice (Reply to this comment)

Even worse is giving out your social security number. People can claim your identity. I have seen blanks for the number on web purchases, registration forms at doctor offices, and on drivers' licenses. You do not have to give it out! It is not your national I.D. number!

Helpful advice, but... (Reply to this comment)

...it won't always help you. All it takes to be placed on one e-mail list that is being sold to spammers. And all you have to do, for example, is to send an e-mail to a Hotmail account. The current change of Terms of Service there states that the owner of Hotmail has the right to collect and use (also sell) and incoming information to any Hotmail address.
