Epinions Computers Q&A: Week 4
by vicwang | Apr 03 '01
They say one of the best ways to learn is from other people's experiences, and that's no exception when it comes to learning computer skills.

Versions of Win95 (Reply to this comment)
by jucm
If you're interested... I have compared Win95 Original, as well as OSR2 and 2.5. I came to the conclusion that OSR2 is better than OSR2.5.

This is because there are certain incompatibilities with drivers in OSR2.5 that do not exist is OSR2. For example, the D-Link DFE530TX drivers simply won't load in version C. I have also seen problems with reference drivers for the Voodoo2.

Just another piece of information from a chaotic world... -jucm

On the slots... (Reply to this comment)

... I guess if you've got a system that stacks your cards vertically rather than horizontally, the heat rejection issue might not be much of a factor. Same goes for a system that uses a fan to suck air sideways [ y'know, instead of allowing hot air to rise by natural convection leading to the possibility of a 'blanket' of hot air over the hot components building up and preventing further heat flow, removing the heated air directly over the components as it's produced, thus enhancing the heat transfer from the components—oh boy, sorry, I'm starting to sound like a conference paper! (~; ] from the cards... have seen a heavy duty fan installed on the side of a friend's new comp case, more-or-less directly across from the PCI/AGP slots...

That question (and your explanations) about chess software was interesting!

Thank you for another well done job, Vic! ...t-žoo

Hey Gr8ful! Thanks for the heads up about version D. When will the Windows version madness ever end :-).

This is an excellent Q&A and it's good to see you back in full swing. Just a heads up for you, there was actually a Windows 95 version D that was released only in new computer systems just prior to the release of Windows 98 in late 1997. I own a Compaq Presario 4814 that I bought in November of 1997 and it came with a full version of Windows 95 version D. The only difference from version C is the addition of Internet Explorer 4.0 and a few multimedia plug-ins.

Just thought you'd like to know..

I'm sure I speak for all those non-computer mavens (and probably even some of them too). Thanks a lot for your time and effort Vic, we sure appreciate it.

"that if one ever has a problem with cards in certain slots, they should rearrange it"

Very true. In some cases I've found that to be the only possible solution, since Windows only gives you so much leeway when it comes to assigning IRQ's manually, and even assigning IRQ's through the BIOS can be troublesome. I once had a DVD decoder card that I just couldn't get on its own IRQ, even after trying each of my five PCI slots. Eventually the only solution that worked was reinstalling Windows!

Anyway, thanks for the SB Live tip; I hadn't heard of Live cards having that problem before.

slot arrangement (Reply to this comment)

HI. This is a great idea. The Q & A part of comp magazines is one of the first things I check. One thing about the slot arrangement though. I have found that for some reason, SB Live cards are unhappy in certain PCI slots, especially in computers based on the NT kernel. Not sure why though, but I thought it was an interesting thing to bring up.... the fact that if one ever has a problem with cards in certain slots, they should rearrange it. Again, great idea. I look forward to reading more of these Q & A's.
