Instant Ethernet and more!

Written: Mar 08 '01
Pros:Easy set up. My 4 Macs had no complaints
Cons:Little Mac friendliness in manual or at support website
The Bottom Line: Distributing cable modem access through this router is simple. For my family use the few networking complexities covered in the manual did not apply. Plug & play!

Okay, I am a Mac only user dating from the 512K and Macplus era. I don't have much money (but, boy if I did, I'd buy a big..., oh, sorry)... and I like a 'good' deal. This $100 (shop! You can find it near that price) router is easy to set up and works FINE with my Macs. I considered the Macsense router that cost $40-50 more and decided to grit my teeth and try the Linksys route. Good move! There is little documentation about the Mac connection. But, savvy people know that DHCP ethernet is a protocol not dependent on platform.

The one glitch I faced required me to toss some preferences in MS I-Explorer. (seems my new net addresses didn't jive with some bank security stored cookies.) When I called Linksys, they were welcoming, but not apologetic about their Mac ignorance. Their support site was similar. All in all, I didn't need their help and I'm glad I saved some bucks over the Mac named products. Have courage and go for it!
