Re: Lots of valuable info - and about those covers...and your pricing? (Reply to this comment)

I think they might store vertically in the forward part of the bed.
I get my typical discounts off Edmunds, for what that's worth. If I lived in the area I'd be happy to negotiate for you. I tend to be a pretty good negotiator as a buyer, not very good as a seller.
Dealers around here are currently advertising GM employee pricing for everyone, but I'm not sure of the details. With Chrysler through the end of the year if you know a Chrysler employee you can get a PIN number from them that will entitle you to employee pricing, which is about 4% under invoice.
I should note that at this point the prices in this review are not current. I'm working on a fix for this.

Lots of valuable info - and about those covers...and your pricing? (Reply to this comment)

Excellent detailed information.
I read somewhere that for hauling taller items, the hard bed covers store flat on the bed functioning as part of the truck's bed when necessary. Please do not hold me to this, as I neither own an Avalanche nor recall where I saw this little tidbit. Can anybody confirm/refute?
Regarding your pricing, I understand the list isn't what would normally be paid, but your discounts seem somewhat generous, at least here in NYC, NY. Wanna come negotiate a price for me?
As I stated above, excellent review.

I was wondering, too... (Reply to this comment)

About the Sport Trac comparison. Looks like that was covered. Very informative review, as usual.

Not currently for sale, cannot hold nearly as much, much more expensive...from a rational perspective the H2 SUT is not nearly as good a buy unless you plan on doing some serious off-road driving.

...they are selling them currently, but you should add the Hummer H2 SUT as a vehicle for comparison. It reminds me so much of the Avalanche.
Great review as always :)

The glass fastens to the inside of the midgate, behind the rear seat. When the midgate is folded it is underneath and thus protected. Very clever.
My understanding is that nothing has to go in the garage. I don't know where the tonneau stows, but supposedly its stowable on the truck somehow. I imagine it must take up quite a bit of room, though.
A Sport Trac is not nearly as veratile, though thanks for bringing up that possibility. The bed cannot be extended into the cab, though a conventional bed extender (which gets in the way of loading and unloading stuff) is available. The bed cannot be made into a secure compartment, although a hard tonneau cover is optional. No storage is available in the bed walls.
I've never driven the Sport Trac, but based on driving the old Explorer I assume it does not handle or ride as well as the Avalanche despite its smaller size. Fuel economy should be a bit better than with the Avalanche, but with EPA ratings or 15/20 it's still not pretty.
Pricing on a similarly equipped Sport Trac XLT (hard tonneau, bed extender, power driver's seat):
List: $30,200
Typical, after a $2,000 rebate: $25,700.
So the actual price difference is about three grand, not ten. The Explorer makes sense only if you really want its more compact dimensions.

Didn't see this, (Reply to this comment)

and got curious: If you remove the rear window glass, what do you do with it? is there some kind of "stowage slot" integrated, or does it have to be stored in the garage?
Gee, and just last week someone tried to tell me that an Explorer Sport Trac was just as versatile for $10K less. Guess you told him!
Great job.
