The Bottom Line Here are my choices for ' Ten Best' sports movies.
Great sports movies are typically about something other than the games we play. Many times the sport serves as a backdrop for a deeper story. Other times a great sports movie tells the inspiring true story of a sports figure. When Hollywood gets it right, sports movies are a real joy. Here are ten of my favorite sports movies. 10) The Natural The surreal story of Roy Hobbs, an amazing baseball talent and his tragic shot at the big time. Hobbs promising career is cut short by a gun. Robert Redford, Joe Don Baker, and Glen Close star in this fanciful baseball tale. 9) Rocky Journeyman Rocky Balboa gets a shot at Apollo Creed's heavyweight title. Rocky (played by his creator, Sylvester Stallone ) loses the title but finds himself and his true love.The underdog Rocky goes the distance but is left wanting only Adrianne as the title bout ends. Talia Shire and Burgess Meredith co-star. 8) Rudy The inspiring true story of Rudy Ruettinger, a true underdog whose tenacity earn him a spot on the fabled Notre Dame football squad. Rudy is an inspiration to all who dream of glory. This amazing young man lets nothing stop him. 7) Caddyshack Bill Murray stars as greenskeeper Carl Spackler in this uproaringly funny comedy. A very funny and origional picture in the Saturday Night Live vein. Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, and Rodney Dangerfield all add to the fun. 6) Eight Men Out This baseball movie recounts the infamous 'Black Sox Scandal' of 1919. Eight members of the Chicago team conspire to 'throw' the World Series. Relive the darkest days in the annals of baseball. 5) Knute Rockne; All-American This film features Ronald Reagan as Notre Dame back George Gipp. He utters the famous line , "..win just one for the Gipper". Pat O'Brein plays Rockne. A must for any football fan, especially Notre Dame loyalist. 4) Hoosiers Gene Hackman plays the coach of a high school hoops team in basketball crazy Indiana. The film captures the intensity of the team's climb to a championship. Dennis Hooper delivers a great performance as the assistant coach who struggles with a drinking problem. 3) Brian's Song Billy Dee Williams stars as Gale Sayers, star Chicago Bear halfback. James Caan plays his close friend and teammate Brian Picollo who is locked in a tragic struggle with cancer. 2) Field of Dreams Kevin Costner plays a midwestern farmer who builds a baseball park in the middle of his cornfield. Ghost from baseball's past, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, relive their baseball days on the field. 1) Pride of the Yankees The true story of New York Yankee captain Lou Gehrig. The film features a cameo by Babe Ruth. Gary Cooper stars in the title role. Coopers rendition of Gehrig's emotional farewell speech on ' Lou Gehrig Day' is riveting. Those are ten of my favorite sports movies. Any of these would be a good choice on a rainy day. If you haven't seen any of these, your local video store most likely has them. Frequently they are shown on American Movie Classics or TBS . Hope you enjoy these classic sports movies as much as I did!  |
