Pros: Good, clean beer with decent flavor.
Cons: Not really a pilsener at all.
The Bottom Line: The name is misleading, but this is a decent generic beer that I could enjoy in limited quantities while soaking my feet in the pool in summer.

NOTE: There was no category for GOLDEN Pilsener, so I put it here; in fact, this is the same beer with a new label!! - Marty
"On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love set before me, a golden beer with head a'plenty."
about SARANAC
Saranac beers are brewed by the Matt Brewing Company, a brewery located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Central New York. Over a century old, the brewery is currently being run by the third and fourth generations of the Matt Family (Nick and Fred, respectively). Today, the company brews a number of different beers (27 different beers in the recent past, including seasonals and limited editions), as well as 5 different soft drinks.
about GOLDEN PILSENER
Pilsener is one of the oldest types of beer brewed - at least in the modern era. It makes sense that any collection of beers from Saranac would include a pilsener - and I found their Golden Pilsener included in the 12-pack.
Unfortunately, I don't know that it IS a pilsener. The bottle shows that it is an "American Wheat" - and I don't think I've ever heard of a Wheat Pilsener. Regardless, I'm going to call it an American wheat... As it stands, this is simply a repackaging of their existing pilsener.
The "Pilsener" is made with wheat and dry-hopped with Tetthanger hops. It pours with only a slight head which fades quickly and offers up a sweetish, malty nose. The wheat is strangely unevident from the first glance as the pale yellow and CLEAR liquid fills the glass.
From the first taste, it does come off almost like a pilsener, but the wheat flavor offers itself. Each taste definitely has a wheaty finish, which I actually enjoyed. There is a hint of hops to it, but not much - I think it's the hops which gives it a relatively pilsener-like quality. The beer comes highly carbonated, which also brings up a more American pilsener feel to it - Saranac's answer to Budweiser, perhaps?
final THOUGHTS
Overall, I enjoyed this beer - whether it is a pilsener or a wheat beer. It was a refreshing taste with a hint of wheat, a hint of hops and a decent flavor overall. It's a little light in body, but it would be a good beer for a hot day out in the sun.
random BEER FACT
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's".
