| Naomi7835's Full Review: Rubbermaid Plus 50-Piece Set |
This past year I received this Rubbermaid Plus 50 piece set as a gift from my grand children, which I was very pleased to get.
I've had all kinds of plastic containers over the years. A few Rubbermaid, and Tupperware containers, but usually I've always used those Ziploc and Glad containers, for storing leftovers and freezing foods in. They always worked fine, but over time, I've either misplaced a few lids or found out that the lids did not seal well after using them for a while. So when I received the Rubbermaid 50 piece set this past year I went into my cabinet and cleaned out all of my old plastic containers that the lids were no longer tight fitting.
I was a little concerned about this 50 piece container set ( 25 containers and 25 lids). Being there's just the two of us, would I be able to use use all of these containers, or would they just take up room in my cabinet. But I soon found out that the 25 containers along with the 25 lids were all put to good use this past year.
CONTAINER SIZES:
ROUND SIZES
4---8.2oz.
4---1.4-pint.
4---11.8oz.
2---1.3-quart.
2---1 pint.
2---1 quart.
SQUARE SIZES
3---1.3 pint.
2---1.2 quart
RECTANGLE SIZES
2---1.2 quart.
All of the containers are clear, so you'll know at a glance what is stored in them.
The lids are dark blue in color and have an oversized tab at one end for easy opening. The tab is easy to grasp and large enough to be able to get some leverage to be able to remove the lid. I do have a little arthritis in my wrists but I've found the lids fairly easy to put on and easy for me to lift off. Although every once in a while it did take a few trys to finally get a lid off.
One feature that I really like is that they stack on top of one another with the lids on for easy storage. I don't have to worry about losing or misplacing the lids in my cabinet.
The lids also fit very snug on each container. I never have to worry about getting any other fridge smells leaking into any of these Rubbermaid containers that I have food stored in.
After having used these Rubbermaid containers for some time now, I've found that they do keep my leftover foods fresher longer, then if I just put them in the fridge in the dish it was served in.
A lot of times I like to get my ingredients ready the night before I plan to make a meal the next day. I can get my meat cut up, chop my onions or green peppers up and keep all of these foods separate in containers in my fridge until I need them to prepare my meal for the next day.
A few times when I've used just a portion of cream cheese or any hard cheeses, I can use the smaller containers for storing the left over cheese. The tight fitting lids helps to keep them fresher longer then just storing them in their original wrappers.
Have you ever had a recipe that calls just for the egg yolk or the egg white? Well the leftover part that you don't use that day can be placed in one of the smaller Rubber maid containers, and can be kept for 3 days or more in the fridge. If storing or freezing the egg yoke, you should cover the egg yoke completely with water before storing it or freezing it.
I like to store my homemade leftover dips in these Rubbermaid containers also. If you buy already made dips from the supermarket, and keep the leftover dip in the same containers that they come in, the dip will not last as long. Keeping the dips stored in a Rubbermaid container will keep the dip fresher and last longer.
DO YOU WORRY ABOUT THE STAINING OF PLASTIC CONTAINERS?
As long as I have ever used any kind of plastic containers, I've never had any container stained form using foods that contain a tomato base, and that goes for these Rubbermaid containers also. Before I wash out a container that has had a tomato based food in it, I always rinse out the container in very cold water first, and then wash it out in hot soapy water. The tomato base has always washed off with no stains left in my containers at all. My daughter will lightly grease a plastic container with a very light coating of crisco on the inside of a container, before she stores any tomato based foods in her containers. But I still prefer my cold water wash for releasing any tomato base from my containers.
MICROWAVE SAFE:
As well as keeping my leftovers fresh and appealing, these Rubbermaid containers allow me to reheat my food in the microwave and bring the container right to my table.
FREEZER SAFE:
This past Thanksgiving I had quite a bit of turkey broth left in my roasting pan. I filled up 4 of the larger containers and froze the broth. This way I can thaw the broth and make a gravy for a future meal.
CLEANING:
The Rubbermaid 50 piece set is dishwasher safe and should be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher. I don't have a dishwasher, but I've found the containers are very easy to wash out by hand in hot soapy water.
It's a good idea to make sure that any hot food items have cooled down some before placing any leftovers in the Rubbermaid containers to be stored in the fridge.
MY FINAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Rubbermaid Plus 50 Piece Container Set is made of a heavy duty plastic, and has held up very well, whether you use them just for casual use or everyday use like I do. There great for storing or freezing leftovers. They'll keep veggies like radishes and cut up celery stalks fresh and crisper longer.
They don't stain, warp, or absorb odors, the lids fit snug and the containers stack up well for storage. Sure you can spend a little more for other containers, but with the Rubbermaid Plus 50 piece set you really can't go wrong. I received this set as a gift, and I'm sure these containers will make someone you know just as happy as I am to have received this Rubbermaid Plus 50 piece set as a gift.
Thanks for reading, and I wish everyone a Very Merry and Joyous Holiday!!
