| mirren's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII for PlayStation 1 |
another installment of the final fantasy series. you start this game in an area called balamb garden, which in my opinion is an excellent setting. you will encounter various gardens throughout this game. these gardens are designed to produce seed's who you will later find out are designed to protect the world from evil sorceresses.
you play a character named squall who is a shy guy who doesn't like to express his feelings. anyway he ends up falling in love with this girl called rinoa who along with squall and the other seed member set off on a hunt to assassinate the sorceress edea. ill not go into all the details but it is an excellent storyline. after you defeat edea at the end of the second disc you suddenly here of this sorceress from the future which i think is a bit of a flaw in the game as you have not heard her name mentioned for the whole of the first two discs. anyway this is the main aim of the game. along the way you have lots of fun mini quests in the good old-fashioned final fantasy style. the card game is extremely fun and you can have hours of fun just on this. different areas have different rules but some rules can be a bit annoying like the random rule.
during the game there is a huge part taken up by the love story between squall and rinoa and you really get to see his sensitive side, which wasn't so obvious in cloud in ffvii.
one thing i especially like in this game is the fact that to get some of the gf's (same as summons in ffvii) you actually have to defeat them and for one of them (doom train) you have to solve another mini quest.
unlike ffvii were you have materia on 8 you have to draw magic out of your opponents or from draw points in order to use magic. the magic isn't as powerful as it was in 7 and a lot of the magic's aren't much use apart from to junction to improve your physical abilities. you can junction this magic to make you stronger, have more hp, have stronger magic etc. But only certain GF's allow you to junction in certain areas so knowing the right combinations to put them in is a real skill.
Just like in 7 you get into a lot of annoying battles with ridiculously big monsters, but on this game the storyline is much more superior and you can never get bored as there is always another puzzle to solve and extra mini games thrown in here and there.
The only problem with this game is when you get up to the last disc. It is too short and some of the puzzles are very difficult to solve and many people won't do everything on it (I know I didn't solve all of them) but this is only a minor problem which apart from that is almost a flawless game.
This game is pure quality with a lot of hours of endless fun. A lot of things improved on since 7. The storyline is much better in my opinion longer and better gameplay and you don't have to run around defeating enemies for money because you don't get paid for battles you get paid as a wage for being a SeeD and the better SeeD you are the more you get paid. This game has got everything and if you do not own it go buy it now!! You can probably buy it for about £10 now as playstation games aren't that much in demand anymore.
