Building Self-Esteem by janinew3 | Apr 05 '01 To sit back and allow a child his own frustration and time to fail before succeeding, is a critical part of his recognition of success and his own self-esteem.Return to opinion

Great ideas!!! (Reply to this comment)
by shelxland
Personally, I want my 5 year old to be more independent than his older brother who I did everything for... and he is.
I "expect" him to do for himself. If he asks for help, I'm there of course, but most of the time he takes the inititive and does the job himself.
I regret not doing this for my older son.

Great review! (Reply to this comment)

Many times kids come up to me asking me to draw this or that. I tell them lets do it together. I let them do the majority of the work and then I tell them they did a fantastic job!
One day, my friend's toddler asked me to draw an elephant for him. Instead of drawing it for him, I asked him what is the shape of an elephant? I drew an oval sphere(for the body); a circle (for the head); and rectangles (for the legs). I then told him to draw the elephant as he saw it.
He drew a pretty nice elephant! All I did was add the trunk and tail. Later that day I was so proud of him as he told his mother, "Mommy, look what I drew with the help of Uncle Steve".
Great review!

One of the hardest lessons I learned (Reply to this comment)
by Lisa_J
was that I cannot solve everything for my child and that I cannot always be seen by them as their best friend. Sometimes I really don't like being a PARENT! =)

Comes with experience (Reply to this comment)

This article sounds like it definitely comes from a woman with experience in raising children. As a newlywed, my husband and I hope and pray that one day we will be wonderful parents - parents who know where to draw the line. Articles such as this one will help us to have our eyes open to potential problems in parenthood. Great article!

Great review! I SOOOO wish I could forward this to my husband's ex-wife. We have a terrible time with her doing almost every thing in your 1-10 list!!!
I'm glad I'm not "losing it"!
