Evenif nothing is perfect...

Written: Mar 09 '01
Pros:Sound Quality, Multimedia Card
Cons:Design
The Bottom Line: If you're both music and PDA maniac, take it!

Visor's expandability is the most impressive property for me as I don't want to carry many things along. MP3 player is the current topic. I have two MP3 springboard modules to choose from; Soundsgood and MiniJam. Finally, the latter was chosen.

The package came with a black MiniJam Module, Earbud, Multimedia Card, Soft pouch and softwares on a CD-Rom. With pre-loaded software, the module begin its function as soon as it is inserted into visor. I could listen to the music evenif the visor is turned off.

Design
I actually don't like the design because of being too large for its thickness and length especially when compare to Soundsgood. By the way, it could fit my belt clip holster from Handspring. In addition, there're more rooms for buttons, DC power jack, headphone jack and LED indicator.
Comparing to Soundsgood, I think I prefer expandability to size. MiniJam intakes power from the same source of visor so the battery is quite a big concern. Innogear also sells energy module which could extend the music time up to 15 hours with 4 AA alkaline batteries. However, unlike Soundsgood, MiniJam can't be used without visor. The included Soft pouch is quite good-looking. There are belt clip at top and a small space in the front. But I still get stick to belt clip holster.

Sound Quality
It's quite easy to differentiate the sound via included "Earbud" from Sony's headphones because the latter produce much better tone and design. There are 4 default sound adjustments; Rock, Pop, Classical and Dance. Nevertheless, they do nothing to me...don't even try to compare with a huge stereo system. When using with a pair of 40-watt speakers, the sound is quite good. I also tried the cassette car adaptor and found that it's noisy when I increase the volume of my car's player. I had to adjust the volume from the module and left the volume of car's player unchanged. Nothing is perfect, though.

Multimedia Card
The card is smaller than Smart Media and Compact Flash but more fragile. There are two slots so more songs could be stored but they could be transferred only via its software. By the way, another accessory called SpeedLoader which is USB-MMC adaptor might ease the process. There are some sample songs in the included Multimedia Card and CD-Rom. Innogear is trying to release the software for making Multimedia Card slot be another memory module.

Softwares
There are 3 softwares pre-loaded in the unit. LaunchPad - for choosing among music, ebook and picture program. MiniJukeBox - for song list management. The control functions are exactly the same as the buttons on the top. MiniLoader - for transferring the songs.

Conclusion
I love this springboard module and use it everyday with my Visor Platinum and rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries.
