If I had to describe Yahoo! Companion in only two words they would be, "great" and "convenient". Okay so you can't remember the address to a website you have in your Yahoo! Bookmarks. Instead of having to go through the Yahoo! main page, with Companion you just click on the Bookmarks icon and quickly access all your bookmarks. Okay, here's another one; you are expecting an email, and you want to be notified as soon as it's in your inbox. You don't have Companion, so you're clicking "Check Mail" every 10 seconds. Why do that? Continue what you're doing, be notified when there is new email in your inbox.
