Background
I use to shy away from buying online... not because I was afraid of something or whatever... I just wanted to support the locally owned music stores. However, over the past couple years, the deals that are available through mail order/online outfits such as MF are just insane. Grant it, we all realize that you're giving up a certain level of customer service, but the prices.....
My experiences
My first ever experience with ordering anything online came in early December 2001. As I've reviewed elswhere on epinions, I ordered an Ibanez Jem. Yes that's like jumping in without looking since it was nearly $2,000.00.
I used their 'Online assistance' thing which is real time instant messaging and talked to a rep, who informed me it didn't come with a case, so I had to add one to my order. I'm glad I talked to him. LOL
Deliver It To ME
I got online and ordered it on December 12. Three days later in the middle of the afternoon, I had 2 large boxes waiting for me (the guitar and a hardshell case). I didn't order any special shipping or anything. That's just how quick it got here.
Since then
I've only ordered one other thing off there, and that was a couple months ago when I bought some Mackie HR 624 Reference monitors for $419.00 each. They arrived a couple days after I ordered them... well packaged and fully intact.
Website
Overall I find the functionality of the Musician's Friend website to be pretty good. Categories are logically arranged and the links are easy to see and navigate. The online ordering is a cinch to use... which makes me wonder why I don't buy more junk off of there. LOL
What if
What if something goes wrong and you have to send it back? Well I have no idea, because I've never had any problems like that.
Conclusion
I believe if you do your research on what it is you are wanting to purchase (like going to harmony-central or checking out the newsgroups) you will be ok ordering online for most things.
Grant it, buying a guitar without playing it is a huge risk, which is what I did, but I believe I was fortunate in that everything came out well for me in that aspect.
There is no doubt that for buying guitar strings, buying from them is the way to go... in bulk more or less, because I have 5 guitars and go through strings rather quickly.
So if you haven't tried it yet, go ahead. They have an excellent return policy.

Yes
What product did you purchase or try to purchase? One expensive guitar, an expensive pair of monitors.
