I made three separate orders at B&H Photo-Video's web site during the just-before-Christmas period, for a Nikon camera, two Nikon lenses and a Sony DVD player.
The online shopping experience was well above average, especially the ability to quickly zero in on the products I was looking for via repeated search refinements (for example: Nikon ---> Lenses ---> Zoom Lenses). The product descriptions were generally adequate, but not as good as some really top notch retail sites.
But overall, it was about as easy to shop here as at any of the big highly rated online stores.
However, I did run across two problems:
1) If you don't create an online account with B&H, the only way to check your shipment status is by sending your order number in an email. Unfortunately, the email address they provided didn't work. Solution: just set up an account.
2) After one of the orders, it became difficult to communicate with B&H for about a week. It appeared that they might have been either moving or upgrading their computer system, but none of this was clearly communicated to me as a customer. If I hadn't already known their good reputation, I would have been worried.
The big selling point of B&H is price. They had competitive low prices for all the items I was interested in. No one else actually beat them. In addition, for many products, they provide the option of even more savings on products they import directly, bypassing the American middlemen and--more significantly--the American warranty. For example, I saved about 10 per cent on the Nikon camera and lenses by foregoing the warranty. Otherwise, the product I received was identical to the with-warranty product. The great thing is you have a choice.
