It's time for a Treat!
Apr 05 '01
The Bottom Line Cats are very special, and need lots of loving!
"Here kitties! I'm home! Who's my favorite cat? My favorite cat gets to have the first treat!" Sadly enough, I actually say this each time I step in the door home from work. And, true to my word, the first cat to greet me gets a treat first.
How often should you give your kitties a treat?
My fiance and I really love our three cats. (Candy, Ali, and Bailey.) I tried to cut down on their treat amounts to save money, but Aaron (the hubby) got all tear-y eyed and said "but they're my girls!"... And so, the cats still get treats twice a day.
In the mornings, I am far too tired to feed any cat. I basically stumble to work at 6 in the morning. Aaron wakes up hours later, and feeds them "mushy" food, which is, for those of you that don't use cute talk around your cats, canned cat food. We use all kinds of different types. We spend more time at WalMart picking out different varieties of cat food than we do shopping for ourselves. We always buy every type of Friskies, because not only do they seem to like it the most, it's the most economical. Okay okay, usually there's something a little cheaper, but you have to open it with a can opener. Those Friskie lids are so convenient.
Around our dinner time, they get their second dosage of treats. Usually this is done just so they don't sit around watching us eat. Again, a great variety of treats, but this time, they are crunchy. (We started this ever since we found out our twin two-year-old cats have bad teeth. How would we know? Our vet told us when we had to take Candy in for an emergency.) So, we get dental treats. We've tried the jerky-types but they usually are in big pieces, and we're always worried that they aren't going to chew it properly.
Do keep in mind that it's incredibly important to ALWAYS have fresh water and some food out for your cats. We always have a bowl of crunchy food out for them. The treats are just that - TREATS. It's not meant to replace meals, just show them how much we love them!
We bought about 12 small plates at a dollar store. We usually use about six of them a day. (Three in the mornings for the mushy food, and three at night for the treats.) We can't feed them all from the same plate, or they get irritated at each other. Maybe we're just paranoid. I guess a "cat psychologist" would actually have to tell us what the cats think about sharing plates!
And that's all I have to tell you. Make sure your cats get lots of treats, lots of petting, and lots of love. They are little people, too, you know!
