Summary:
It took 10 minutes to set-up this router to replace my old one, install the PC Card into my laptop, restart the router and be surfing the internet from anywhere in my house, my neighbors house, and well probably farther, but it's cold outside so I am not testing that far yet.
Details:
Why I Purchased this Router:
I owned a NetGear router for awhile. Every now and then it would give me weird problems, such as not letting me view a website like (www.yahoo.com) but every other site on the web, then I got an Xbox. Now in order to play Xbox properly without lagging, I had to unplug both my other computers. Or in order to surf the internet on one computer I had to unplug the Xbox and the other computer. Now tell me the purpose of having a router that needs each thing to be unplugged for it to work... Right there isn't one.
I did some research and had decieded on buying a LinkSys, but did see quiet a few negative reviews for it. I went to Best Buy and asked the supervisor of the computer section if he had any recommendations, he said the LinkSys that I was looking at or the Microsoft. After some thought and hesitation, I went with the Microsoft.
Installation:
Unplugged old router and modem. Connected new router to modem. Plugged in modem. Plugged in router. Installed software on PC. Installed Wireless PC Card. Surfed the internet.
On a side note.. The remote administration (router setup) is super easy to understand and really easy to navigate. You can change all the standard stuff, what mode the base station runs in (either 802.11g or 802.11g and .11b), firewalls, port forwarding, MAC cloning, etc.
Performance:
Please note, I am writing this after owning this for a couple days and have not had time to measure distances exactly. My router is set up for .11g only, no WEP, channel 9.
I currently have the router in my TV room, and am in my bedroom writing this through a wall and closed door about 30 feet away, and am getting 4 out 5 bars for signal strength and currently 54Mbps. Next door at about 70 feet away I get 3 bars and 48Mbps. I will update as I get more time to map this out.
Overall:
I had no problems, and have only good things to say about this router so far. Kudos to Microsoft for making a good product.
