THE "Metallic, Multi-Movement Mix!"

The Bottom Line "An Eclectic Amalgamation, Arranged in Five Movements." Still my all-time favorite recent mix CD, guaranteed to pump you and (maybe) show you something new.

I've been glancing through mix after mix for a long while now and I've been achin' to document one of my own but unfortunately I'm over 4000 miles away from the majority of mixes I've made over the last decade n' a half, all stored away in an 8X8' box in Massachusetts. But luckily I brought one of my more recent CD mixes which has stood the test of repeated plays and varying moods/tastes.

As for background, I was already collecting songs for "Metallic Multi-Movement Mix" while talking to a woman I worked with whose 16 year old girl was learning the bass and hoping to be in the next Kittie (a teenage, Canadian, all-female band). Hence I included rare Kittie/L7 elements, though as I said- it's certainly stood the tests listed above. I do however make any indications of songs I regret including or versions I would have changed...

I offer all 21 songs in their original order (which fit on any low-budget, 74 minute CD) respectfully to the masses. Jam on it and try not to hurt yourself or those you share it with.

I. Killer Kick-Off

Powerman 5000
- When Worlds Collide
A metal mix needs a strong, in your face kick off and this one qualifies hand-over-fist (and practically fist-into-face). Though my favorite musical genre is rock/metal, I much prefer melodic bands and vocalists to hardcore screamers... but this song is a great exception.

Marilyn Manson - Beautiful People
Over-rated, shock-for-publicity or fade away Marilyn appears on my mix in the song that fooled me into thinking it was worth buying whatever album "Beautiful People" came from. Still a great song with a great beat that brings on a great aggression.

Therapy? - Knives
I know that many oft-seen epinionators in this category like the unknown talents rather than the well-known and in this vein my mix is a bit of a disappointment, but perhaps Therapy? qualifies... My all-time favorite song by them is included, "Knives."

Smash Mouth - One Thing Is True
Amusing surf-punk tune about a warped break-up, but one of the songs I regret including nonetheless. It was from their most recent album but if I did it again I'd definitely use an older one like "Padrino" or the one about getting evicted whose title escapes me at the moment, because "One Thing Is True" slowed down the pace to early.

Kittie - Da Sh*t You Can't F*ck Wit
GREAT quickie attempt at metal-rap that the girls tried earlier in their career that was included on the "Brackish" single. Great reason to buy that single too...

II. Remarkably Rockin' Remakes

Staind & Limp Bizkit
- Bring da Noize
I grew up with the original Public Enemy lyrics memorized but I prefer the powerchord version and MUCH prefer the changes to the lyrics, like no longer calling Farrakan a "prophet." I do dislike their omission or one entire verse however, so it ain't perfection in my ears.

Living Colour - Sunshine of Your Love (remix)
This cover is found on the "True Lies" soundtrack, which includes their hard rock cover and a hard dance remix. Regret- this movement turned more dance than rock and if I made it again I would've stuck with the rock version.

Steppenwolf & Philip Steir - Magic Carpet Ride (remix)
Another soundtrack song, this one from "Go." This one's always a crowd-pleaser whether they like the harder songs from the first movement or not, and I love their putting a classic like this to dance music (another great one I've recently discovered is "Sweet Home Alabama (remix)".)

Limp Bizkit & Everlast - Faith (remix)
I got a major charge out of seeing Limp Bizkit the first time when they opened for Faith No More back in '99, especially when they played "Faith," but I greatly enjoy the mellower remix, whose chorus is a masked rip-off of Bowie's "Fame."

Run DMC & Aerosmith - Walk this Way
Aaaah, a little old-school goodness. I think the original version is still king, but considering the cover movement turned "dance" on me and how respectable/enjoyable the DMC duet is, I had to include it.

Lenny Kravitz - American Woman
Another recent hit at the time of the mix, I was pleased to include it. And it's a good lead in to the next movements which leaves the dance-style behind.

III. Flowin' Freely to Full Force

Tea Party
- Temptation
Incredibly good band and incredibly underrated. They've got a hard rock sound with a middle-eastern, minor keys sound. This song is from the third album although the second is my favorite.

Soundgarden - Outshined (edit)
Still my all-time favorite Soundgarden song and I have every album, several live CDs, compilations with various rarities, and every single I could ever find. The edited version is from the Outshined single and though I prefer the original version I used the edit to save CD space.

L7 - Guera
Continuing to slow the groove a bit, "Guera" is a hypnotic, semi-hard rock tune with a sitar tint by the ultimate ladies of rock. This is a tough tune to find; as far as I know it's only on the "Off the Wagon" single which contains an unreleased punk tune as well, and I highly suggest picking it up.

Kittie - Charlotte (mellow version)
A great version of a great song, I got this from the "Brackish" single as well. I do have to qualify it as a regret though- if I were taking no one into account while making this I would've included Infections Groove's "Violent and Funky" in the next movement and omitted this one. And speaking of which...

IV. Massive Metallic Momentum

Metallica
- Sad But True (live)
I usually don't like live recordings as much as studio ones (unless I've been at the concert that was recorded) but this gem is better than the original. It's available in the live boxed set and on a sampler I nabbed while hanging around my University radio station called "15 Pieces of Live Sh*t."

Faith No More - Got That Feeling
Excellent, over-the-top paced metal tune concerning gambling. It suited the movement's style beautifully, as does their next one in two songs...

L7 - Timebomb
Another one for my friend's daughter's inspiriation but a great tune anyway. Again, I'll admit that I would've omitted this one because I'd prefer just to leave "Guera" on and spread the exposure through different bands, as is NOT the case with...

Faith No More - Surprise, You're Dead
They're one of my all-time favorite bands, mainly because they're so good at so many different genres and so creative within each one. THIS song is the best speed metal song I've ever heard- I wanted the daughter to hear that metal could be this well-structured and varied.

System of a Down - Suite Pee
Hurtling toward the end of the CD, an excellent speed metal riff, screaming lyrics that actually make a person think (if you can decipher them). Frankly, I don't think the band is very good in the big picture, but the song is phenominal for reasons used to describe "Surprise, You're Dead."

V. Swingin', Stylin' Swansong

Soul Coughing
- Wooly Imbibe
It's a sort of punchline. I love Soul Coughing (for all reasons, see my review of "Irresistable Bliss") and had to make sure she had at least heard 'em. This one's not an official release, and also a minor regret- if I did it again, I would've included another non-release, "Budda Rubarb Butter."

And there you have it then. The subtitle, included in the bottom line of this mix list, describes it best- it certainly IS eclectic, but still rather approachable to anyone with an open mind and at least a bit of an ear to more aggressive music.
