Blues in name alone? (Reply to this comment)

There are some good movies on this list. But I am afraid the reviewer is confused about what blues is. Just because a movie has "blues" in the title, doesn't mean it has blues in the plot or soundtrack!
"Mo Better Blues" and "Lady Sings the Blues," for example, despite their names, are about jazz, so do not belong in this list. And the movie that has Blues Traveler in its soundtrack also doesn't belong. Again, despite the name, Blues Traveler plays rock, not blues.
Some of the other choices are good. But I would add, at the top of the list, the documentary "Deep Blues" by Robert Mugge. It is now (finally!) available in video stores. Excellent (and blues-laden) film.

Buddy is my favorite... just saw him a couple weeks ago live and REAL close (have guitar pick he handed to me halfway through the set... since I was right by the stage) Some pics if you click on the Buddy Guy link at my Chicago blues site at http://www.angelfire.com/az/jnesbit
Ry Cooder is an awesome musician. Saw him live about 10 years ago along with Albert Collins. I wish they'd use more blues artists for music soundtracks in films.

...for my still enduring soft-spot for great blues. I saw the film as a teenager, and got a serious case of the blues-bug in me. Ah...The memories...
Your review got me to dig out that Buddy Guy tape again - got Damn Right I've Got The Blues playing on the background now! :-)
Thanks for the brilliant read!

Crossroads Is Right Up There! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for mentioning one of my all-time favorite soundtracks! Ry Cooder has long been a favorite of mine, and from the bottle neck of Viola Lee to the raunch and steam of He Made A Woman Outa Me, you will luxuriate in Delta blues.
His Southern Comfort was also atmospheric, and there is a compilation of just his soundtrack music available.
Interesting topic, and choices. I will have to check out those throat singers!
Thanks,
Casey
