| yrly's Full Review: Teraoptix TERAPIN Stand-Alone CD Video Recorder CD... |
The Terapin is a specialized device, for people with specialized needs. This is not something the average person would need to buy for their home theater unless they were going to use it straight up for CD only recording. Why I bought this unit, and why most others probably do is because it allows virtually anything to be burned onto VCDs. These VCDs (not SVCDs) play on a great number of DVD players. Hence your old VCR tape not only does not degrade, but it now plays on a DVD player. Great for duplication of home movies. Also can record TV programs on the fly onto VCDs. Since there are some issues of DVD recorder compatibility it sort of prevents them from entering into the mix with this device. The VCDs easily transfer to computer, and are totally uninfluenced by copy protection schemes. Thus if your TV had only one set of video inputs and you ran your VCR or DVD player through this prior to the TV it's video output would not be influenced by copy protection. It allows digital copies of music CDs onto consumer CDRs. An easy way around the need for consumer CDRs? Buy some consumer CDRWs, then you can just duplicate the VCDs on your computer saving you the cost of the more expensive medium. This device has its uses, to a specialized market. It seems well enough built (I never had a direct problem with its operation) though it is somewhat complex to use. Contrary to what others have said about needing the manual, you can learn its operation just like any other similar product, I can easily use it without needing the manual. Its not for everyone but if you can use it it will do the job.
