God, after having the worst experience in the world with eCampus, I figured anything would be a vast improvement. I discovered Alibris while searching for book titles with Google.
When you arrive at the Alibris web site (http://www.alibris.com), you are greeted with a clean and attractive, user-friendly interface. You can search for books, movies, and music, typing in artists, authors, ISBNs, or any other piece of information. I know the difficulty for me was finding the right edition of textbook for my graduate classes, but the search pages are usually quite specific. You can find editions, publishing information, and more within your search results. You can also find used or new publications. Most used book sellers will give you a fairly good description of your merchandise (if the seller is worth their salt), including any marks on the pages, the binding, if the book has its original wrapping and materials, and so forth.
I got an excellent price on my books, which seems rather consistent with other reviewers who note that Alibris is fair in its pricing. Of course, if you're shopping for used texts and movies, you can stand to save a little more -- and in my case, receive books that are practically in "new" condition. Just make sure you read the descriptions carefully.
Alibris also offers standard and expedited shipping. Standard shipping through UPS takes roughly a week after the order has been processed, while expedited comes within a couple of days. If you spend a certain amount ($45, I think), you're eligible for free standard shipping -- popular gimmick with most online retailers. (I think I paid $8 or so for my books, not too bad.) The only unfortunate thing is that if you order several books at once, Alibris may "break apart" your order, meaning that your books may arrive separately.
Alibris.com also stands by its products. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, you can return your merchandise with the enclosed packing slip or contact the company online for further instructions.
Oh, and if you're a return customer, once you log in your information, Alibris will keep it on file so that future shopping experiences are faster, yet still secure.
I absolutely enjoyed shopping here. If I can't get my books from the campus bookstore, Alibris is the first place I'm headed.
