Star, by V.C. Andrews
This is the second book in the WildFlower Series. (It’s really a divorce series. There are four girls in a support group in a psychiatrist’s house. They are testing telling their stories to other people, the outside world. The novels go in order, one per girl, and it will end up in a sequel that combines all four tales.)
Okay, you know me. I’m going to pick apart this book, even though V.C. Andrews comes up with the best plots, and the most captivating books I have ever read. (Sorry about this Virginia.) One of my main problems with this particular book in the series, is that it doesn’t mention for awhile that Star is black. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t matter too much. But we are supposed to know that she’s from the worst part of Los Angeles, her mom was a drunk, her dad walked out on her, etc etc, it goes on and on. V.C. Andrews goes ahead and explains every other girl down to the color of pony tail she’s wearing, but completely forgets to mention until who knows how long into the novel - that the main character is African-American.
The second problem with this book somewhat relates to the first issue. In the starting novel in the series, Star is made out to be a snobby, too-high-for-you girl, with ebonics. Broken english, and a lot of interuptions. However, suddenly now she has perfect grammar, and also a great vocabulary. (Not bad for having basically dropped out of school so that she could raise her kid brother.) I wish I had gone through the book with a highlighter, and circled all the words that were way out of the ordinary. I can’t remember, or find the one word that comes to mind. It was something like “Picious” ... It’s not in my dictionary. I’m not surprised.
Overall, it was another plot eventful book. I read the whole novel, as I always do. Star has a different type of story. Her parents didn’t get divorced, they just left her. (Seperately.) Her Grandma takes her in. (Star calls her “Granny” ... I’m surprised it’s not “Grandmother” “Maternal forebear” or any of a number really prodigious statements. (Big Words.)
Do I recommend it? Well, if you’ve read the first one, front to back, you’re probably like me and you’ll read the whole series just to get to the ending. If you haven’t touched the series yet, I would say, stay away. You’re not missing much. It’s too bad, but it’s true. It was another book, completely in First Person, with another fifteen year old girl having conversations with herself. It was another 151 pages I could have spent reading something more informative.
