Incredible theater setup at a low price!

Written: Mar 10 '01
The Bottom Line: The best home theater solution for audio enthusiasts!

Ever since my cheap PC speakers died on me, I have been looking for a great set of speakers on the market. I have been contemplating on whether I should buy the Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500. Then I saw the DTT3500. For $50 more, I could get a larger center speaker, a more powerful subwoofer, and a cooler looking decoder unit. For $250, I purchased the DTT3500 Desktop Theater System.

What Comes In The Box?
This box is huge!! There are so many things that they packed into this box. The items are:

4 speaker satellites
1 center speaker
1 subwoofer
two tripods
mounting equiptment
1 digital dolby decoder
1 remote control
1 15V 4A DC Power Adapter
2 3 meter speaker cable
2 5 meter speaker cable
1 optical cable
1 dual female to female RCA Adapter
1 minijack to Din Cable
1 SPDIF Cable (RCA to RCA)
1 Stereo to Dual RCA Cable
1 Tandem Audio Cable
1 SPDIF DIN cable

Hmm...did I forget something?? Oh yeah, 2 AA batteries for the control. After unpacking all the stuff, it is on to installation...

Installation
You need to set up about 30 minutes to an hour just to set up everything neatly and properly. Connecting the speakers and the sub to the unit is pretty much straight forward, but the confusing part is actually connecting the system to you PC. If you have a Soundblaster Live! card and want to make use of Digital Dolby 5.1, then you should use the minijack to DIN cable. Else, you need to use the tandem audio cable. If you have a TV, then use the stereo to Dual RCA cable. If you have a Playstation 2, then use the optical cable. If you have a DVD player, then use the SPDIF DIN cable. The beauty of the DTT3500 is its ability to have multi sources. You could hook up all these systems at one time and just select which source you want to hear.

Performance
This speaker system is really meant for a small room. Each of the speakers, except for the sub and center speaker, only pack 7 watts of power. This may not seem much, but they definitely sound loud. The subwoofer may be a little lacking at 30 watts, but you have to option of changing it to a high power sub. I personally found the sub to be pumping beats pretty loud. At half the volume, you can wake up all the people in you homes!

This system truly excels in watching DVDs. If you have a DVD player that supports SPDIF passthrough to obtain 5.1 surrund sound, then you will see the beauty of these speakers. I fired up the Matrix and I was blown away. It really feels as if you were in a movie theater. Again, this was only at half the volume.

Conclusion
If you want a superb desktop theater for your PC, then these are the speakers to get. At the price of $250, this is one of the cheaper systems to get while getting incredible sound quality and clarity. It is great for both music and movie lovers!
