| sungmin_nam's Full Review: Outrigger Waikoloa Beach |
My husband and I stayed for four nights at the Outrigger Waikoloa on the Big island in November 2003 for part of our honeymoon. We booked it through an agent/friend of mine through GoGo Tours and requested an upgrade which we got. We got an oceanview room with free breakfast buffet vouchers. We absolutely loved this hotel.
The room was very spacious with a small but cozy lanai looking out to the pool and the ocean beyond the pool. The pool has waterfalls built into it. We didn't go in, but it looked neat. Check in was great. The porters bring your bags to your room if you want, but if not, then you can take them yourself. The staff is friendly. We had sparkling wine waiting for us in our room. We also opted to get the additional Voyagers pass for $15/day/room to have free use of the practice facilities on the golf courses and free 20 minutes of internet service at the business center. They have travel services which we did not use because we booked our Big Island tours through our timeshare, but I am glad we didn't need to use them because there was only one person booking the tours and she was often busy. The hotel is beautiful and clean. It is large and our room was quite the hike to the laundry area, but that is my only complaint. They even had a local Baptist pastor come to do Sunday service in the hotel. We had a great time. We ate at the Hawaii Calls restaurant/lounge. They have a carp pond which you walk over into the dining area. The buffet food was always excellent. They have a different styled egg dish every morning. They have waffles, fruit, bacon, fresh juices, pastries, etc. We were always happy with the service and food. They also have tennis courts which also is a part of the Voyagers pass. There is also a spa right near the dining area with a exercise room.
The Waikoloa Marriott is adjacent to the King's Shops which is a strip mall with some big name stores like Louis Vuitton. If you don't have a car, you can stay right in the resort and have plenty to do and see. We ate at a Chinese restaurant there which we thought was overpriced for the food. It is a nice mall to just walk through and window shop. They also have Subways and Starbucks so it is not all expensive shops and restaurants.
There are 2 championship golf courses: the Beach Course and
the Kings Course. We used the practice facility at the Kings Course which is nearer to the highway. They have an excellent staff there. We got there late one night, they let us play a bit past 5 even though they were supposed to close then. The courses were pricy, so we opted to play at the Waikoloa Village course for their dinner and golf special at $65 inc. cart fees and $20 credit towards dinner at their restaurant. It is on twilight rates, but we managed to get out by 1:30. Again, nice staff.
Another nice thing about being there is that it is about a mile to the Blue Hawaiian helopad. We did a two hour Big Island Spectacular tour which took us to Volcano National Park and to the hidden valleys of the north shore. I definitely recommend Blue Hawaiian.
Out of all the hotels we stayed in in our honeymoon to Hawaii, we really liked the Marriott Waikoloa the best. It is a classy place down to every detail. Just under 20 miles from the airport, it is a straight shot north. You will need a car if you plan to visit Kona or Volcano National Park on your own.
