| kezbeth's Full Review: Canon I-960 Photo Printer Ink-jet Printer |
I have owned and used many brands of color and black/white printers over the years. From desk jet to laser printing (I even have one of the old ribbon style printers that still works), all all I can say about the Canon i960 is WOW. I used my new Canon i960 printer for the first time last week. I ended up biting the bullet and shelling out around $200.00 for the Canon but I have been tickled to death with it. I would not take my money back if they offered it to me and I would fight a circle saw to keep anyone from taking it away from me. It is a fine piece of office equipment and I am pleased to say that I am a proud owner of the best printer I have ever used.
I replaced a 1996 Cannon BJC-4304 Photo Bubble Jet printer with the new Canon i960, after I shopped around for several months. I almost bought an new type of Epson Photo printer(the model escapes me right now) that offered the 6 ink cartridges like the Canon i960 but I stuck with a Canon product because I trust the brand and have never had any problems with my Canon products, either at home or at the office. I shopped around for so long because not only was I looking for a great printer printer but I wanted to be able to afford to replace the ink cartridges when they dried up. Those things get expensive in a hurry..
I located a couple of cheaper printers but when I priced the ink cartridges for the cheaper models, I learned that I could replace the printer cheaper than both of the cartridges at the same time. That is not a joke..The six individual color printer cartridges of the Canon i960e cost about $10-13 dollars each color but you can replace only the color that needs to be replaced instead of replacing the entire cartridge when only one color is empty. For me that was a plus because I use a lot of black and reds on reports. The other colors are used for photo's and so far they have lasted a lot longer than I had anticipated. I have printed around 40 5x7 prints and lots of regular 4x6 prints and it is still going strong.
I have to admitt that I love the 4x6 paper feeder that came with my printer. Since I do not make photo prints everyday, I had to put my photopaper back in the box to keep it dust free. Canon's photo paper feeder is covered so when not in use the photo paper can be left inside it for short periods of time and it does not discolor or get dusty. (I would not recommend leaving it in there for weeks at the time but for a few days has not seemed to hurt the quality of my photo paper). It comes with a small package of 4x6 Canon photo paper but I have tried the Staples brand of 4x6 photo paper and I was equally pleased with the results. Plus the Staples brand was somewhat cheaper. I do not know about lasting quality of the prints on the cheaper paper but it looks great for now and only time will tell on that.
It offers direct photo printing from most digital cameras and same camcorders but I have not used that yet. I have the HP Photo Impressions 4 program and I use it to print photographs. I am very pleased with the photo quality. It is whisper quiet and I have had to look at it to see if it was printing because it was so quiet. It prints quickly and can print an 8 x 10 print in about a minute. For the first couple of times I used it, I could not keep it from spitting my printed documents out into the floor when it was finished printing. I located a brown tinted plastic pull inside the printer door that I had to really look for and that solved that problem. It would have probably helped if I had read all of the instructions.
I guess the only draw back I know of with the Canon i960 is that for the price, it does not come with the USB cable and it does not accept the old pin type cord. That was not really a problem because those USB cables are relatively cheap and you can get them anywhere but it was a disappointment to have to wait another day to play with my new printer. If you purchase this printer, be sure you grab an extra USB cable at the same time..
It was very easy to set up and install and it is an attractive silver and dark gray colors that matches the HP desk top computer colors exactly. The printer has a one year limited warranty but with anything, the warranty is only as good as the store where you purchase the product. Best Buys tried to sell me an extended warranty for around $30.00 but I ended up buying from a local owned office supply business because they offered me service without having to send it off and their salesman took a little more time to show me the printers features, while the salesman at other chain office supply stores just pointed and showed me where they were located on the shelf.
I suggest that you purchase the printer somewhere that the sales staff shows it to you, goes over the features and actually shows you how it prints before you buy. I would recommend this printer to anyone that prints color brochures, reports or photographs at home. It is rather inexpensive for the value and it can print a great 8x10 photograph or a single page typed document and I bet you will be pleased... No doubt!!
This thing gets a great big thumbs up from me..
