No More Hyundai Jokes--This Elantra's a Contender
by drive571 | Jan 08 '04
Pros: Smooth and solid road manners, high-quality interior, generous feature content, bargain price, great warranty.
Cons: Stinky new-car smell, mediocre resale value and safety ratings, not as refined as class leaders.

right on - and a word about the shifting... (Reply to this comment)

...I'm buying one of these in about three weeks, and have been doing a bit of research. I wanted to throw out some kudos to the reviewer, and also address the issue of the shifter. Apparently, www.twmperformance.com offers a significantly shorter shifter, and includes aluminum bushings to make things snap a fair bit better. I don't even drive a stick (yet, anyway; I'm buying a 5s GT) but, once I get it nailed, that'll be one of my first purchases.

Yeah, whatever one steps out of before driving a new car really seems to affect the impressions of the next vehicle.

Actually, I didn't mind the Elantra's steering at all. The lack of road feel and resulting rubberiness (if that's a word) made it well short of greatness, but I found it quite accurate and trusty on the road--and the car I drove to the dealership was a modified Miata, with the sharpest steering I've ever experienced, so this wasn't a case of diminished expectations. I guess we all experience things differently... just like they said in philosophy class...

Anyway, thanks a lot for reading and commenting on the review. Hope to read more of your reviews soon.

I was less impressed by this car--the issues with steering and shifter feel you note killed it for me.

It also hurt that I drove a 2003 GT after driving a Tib. The former's interior suffered by comparison. They made some changes to the Elantra's interior for 2004, but I'm not sure how substantial these changes were.

These differences aside, an excellent review.

For being a new member, I see that you'll be a very reliable source for car information. I've noticed the new-car smell as well although I actually like it (although I did smell some tub/tile cleaner last time the bathroom was cleaned and it doesn't smell like a Hyundai yet). The waranty is used on some of its competitors. Hyundai bought Kia in 2000 and so the warranty is used on their cars. Just recently, Hyundai's CEO has taken the place of Mitsubishi's last CEO due to poor sales of their cars and they too adopted the warranty. I think Daewoo had the warranty as well but I'm not sure (but who cares about Daewoo, they stopped exporting cars here to the U.S. in 2003).

Again, I enjoyed the review!
