In the second week of Advent, my son sent me two wish lists—one from Amazon.com, and one from DeepDiscountDVD.com. Although I appreciate the convenience of wish lists, I don’t always shop at the online store the wish list is registered with. I do my own research and check out my own prices.
I selected about eight of his Amazon choices, looked on Shopping.com, and discovered each item was roughly 20% less at Overstock.com.
When I checked out his DVD selections at Shopping.com, I found that DeepDiscountDVD offered the lowest prices about 80% of the time, and decided to give this online store a try.
What Makes DeepDiscountDVD Unique?
- Free Shipping and Handling all the time via USPS Standard Delivery for all orders. Priority mail, UPS Second Day Air shipping, or UPS Overnight Delivery are available for an additional fee.
- Deep Discount DVD has a low price guarantee. If American customers find a lower total price (base price plus shipping and handling) elsewhere, they can obtain the lower price by e-mailing the URL on the product information page of the competing distributor to cs.deepdiscountdvd.com. The guarantee does not apply to competitor coupons, or items sold used at swap or auction sites. Customers should put the words “Price Match” in the subject line of the e-mail.
Shopping at DeepDiscountDVD.com
Shopping is easy at DeepDiscountDVD.com The site sells a wide variety of DVD’s as well as Playstation, GameCube, X-Box games, and DVD accessories. While they have an electronics section listed on the site, only one electronics item, an Argus digital camera, was on sale.
DVD’s are listed in nineteen different categories, including Anime and British Comedy/Drama. My son has assured me that most, though not all, hard-to-find items can be found at DeepDiscountDVD.
Their search engine accepts searches by title, actor and director, and advanced search allows you to add search options such as price and decade.
All items are shown with the suggested retail price in black and DeepDiscountDVD’sprice in red.
Recipients can set up wish lists online and e-mail them to friends and relatives.
Because shoppers must register to shop at DeepDiscountDVD, the site stores all information, including credit card information. Although it is a Verisign secured site with a strict privacy policy, I would prefer to resubmit credit card information every time I shop.
Speed of Delivery—One Area Where DeepDiscountDVD Falls Short
I placed my first order for three DVD’s on December 15. The items were, the site indicated, in stock. I chose free shipping because I believed I had ten days to get the items. For some reason, however, the items did not ship until December 22, and did not arrive at my home until December 28, three days after Christmas.
I placed my second order, for a DVD set, on December 31. Again, I chose free shipping, since I was purchasing the set two weeks in advance of the recipient’s birthday. In checking my order status today, I saw that the order was shipped on January 5, and I have not yet received it.
I am not sure why it takes DeepDiscountDVD six to seven days to send out an order they have in stock. If I had known this the first time I ordered, I would have chosen a different method of delivery, but I believed that DeepDiscountDVD, like most other online stores, ships available items within a day or two of the order placement.
Customer Service—One Bad Experience
While visiting us, my son ordered a DVD set for me on his DeepDiscountDVD account, after failing to find what I wanted in our local electronics stores. He accidentally clicked to purchase before changing the shipping address to my address.
As soon as he received the order number, he immediately wrote Customer Service an e-mail, asking them to change the shipping address from his address to my address. He never received a response, and the item arrived at his home about a week later.
He mailed it to me in priority mail—so much for free shipping on that order.
Coupons, Etc.
DeepDiscountDVD isn’t listed with any of the rebate sites I have shopped with. I saw some individual special item coupons on www.dealcatcher.com. www.xpbargains.com had an expired 20% off coupon listed, and tracks the store’s weekly specials.
If I should shop at this store again, I’ll probably check xpbargains first to see if there are any coupons available.
Overall, A Great Place to Buy DVD’s
I will definitely shop at this online store again, but I will be aware that the product shipping date will probably be about a week after I place my order, and select my mailing options accordingly.
