Life is not as it was when our parents were kids. We must protect ourselves, and use caution in what we do, where we go. I am divorced, and my grown sons are on their own. I feel much more secure carrying pepper spray on my keyring. As a matter of fact, I am reasonably confident that it saved me from being raped, or perhaps killed several years ago. I did not even have to use it. When the man I had (brilliantly) offered a ride, noticed it on my keyring, he wanted out of the car immediately. Why would he care unless he planned on harming me?
It is my understanding that pepper spray needs to be replaced about once a year. Last year I had gone to a gun store to purchase it, and frankly felt awkward there. This year I decided to search online, and quickly found J&L Self Defense Products located at selfdefenseproducts.com. For the record, I have carried mace or pepper spray for over 20 years and never used it, but it does give me confidence when I have to walk my dog in the dark, am driving by myself, or on occasion am in questionable neighborhoods, though of course I try to avoid them.
The site:
J& L Self Defense is a colorful site with nice-sized photos for each of their products. It is easily navigated, and I ran into no error messages whatsoever.
They strongly state that they carry no "junk". They note that they only carry the best possible products available, and additionally stand behind those products.
Their home page has a menu on the left hand side listing clickable links taking you to pages for the following:
* Pepper Spray
* Stun guns
* Key chains
* Batons
* Blowguns
* Knives
* Swords
* Lock Picks (huh?)
* Other products (paint ball guns, slingshots)
* Martial arts
* Auto safety (Lifesaver hammers, emergency flags)

They also have books, and videos, an outlet store, and their specials.
Search engine:
They have a very convenient search called "quick search" and it is. It offers a drop down menu, and you simply pick what you are looking for. It is all in alphabetical order, and takes you immediately to that product.
Methods of payment:
They accept all major credit cards, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and AMEX. They are also open to taking checks, cash, money order or you can use Paypal.
You can mail in your order, fax it in, echeck, or call in your order.
They have a catalog also, if you would like to order from there instead of the website.
Shipping choices:
Again you have choices: Fed Ex 3 day. 2nd day or express delivery. If you are in a rush you can even arrange for Saturday delivery.
Please note that certain states have regulations regarding pepper spray (AK, HI, PR, GU and VI). This may confuse the charges on the site, so be advised.
If you are hoping for a foreign order, these are determined on a case by case basis, they indicate, as there could be governmental or customs issues. Check the site if you have questions, or give them a call.
They don't ship to New York.
Returns:
Everything except lock picks are returnable within 30 days.
Legal stuff:
Their legal information is very detailed, and you'll need to go to the site for this. Needless to say, they will not sell to minors. If you purchase from them, you are in fact stating you are of legal age, and that you are using the products legally.
About my purchase:
As mentioned previously I needed to purchase a pepper spray, and noticed they had a key chain pepper spray unit that included UV dye. If someone tries to rape or injure me they will be sprayed with the pepper spray and they also will be covered in dye, so easily detectable. I found what I wanted. I clicked on the link to read about it (I appreciate their largish fonts as my eyesight isn't wonderful and I hate straining to read on some of the websites. I entered the quantity, 1 of course, and placed it in the cart. Everything after that went equally smoothly. I entered my name, address, credit card information, shipping information. A confirmation email was sent, as well as shipping information. My package was received right on time, and packaged carefully. As everything went smoothly, customer service was not necessary.
Final thoughts and recommendations:
This is an excellent site, and obviously they take pride in offering the best of the type of products they offer. My concerns are the obvious ones; they can't keep people under 18, or those who plan to use these products illegally from doing so. For those simply wanting self protection, adult, and honest people simply wishing to protect themselves, I highly recommend this site. I am giving them 4 stars.
