Pros: Lot of storage, reasonable size, cool color, good software
Cons: Expensive, loud, 100MB drives can't read 250MB disks
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Iomega Zip 250 drive because it has lots of storage space, is easy to use, looks cool, and comes with good software.

| bdb55's Full Review: Iomega Zip 250 External SCSI Drive |
I bought the Iomega Zip 250 drive with my imac so I would have a place to store digital photos without using hard drive space. So far, I have been pleased with the drive, but I have a few complaints.
Out of the box, this drive was very easy to install. Plug in one cord to a USB port, another to a power outlet, install some basic software, and you're ready to go. The drive is a very cool metallic blue color and about 7" X 4" X 1/2".
The drive can by placed horozontally on a desk, or mounted vertically with a rubber support that's included. I like having my drive mounted vertically because it takes up less space on my cluttered desk. The problem with having it mounted vertically is that because the drive is curved, when vertical, the drive is pointing slightly down. This is annoying because to insert a disk, you must pick up the drive. I solved the problem by putting the drive vertically, on top of my external floppy drive. This way I can insert a disk without any repositioning.
The drive comes with one PC formatted Zip 250 disk (it can be reformatted for macs), others can by purchased for about $15.
The software (iomegaware) that comes with the drive is nice. You can access the drive options, and change configurations, ect. You can even lock your disks with individual passwords (you type the password in every time the disk is inserted into the drive.)
It is nice having all the storage space on the 250MB disks. The only way of having more storage that I know of is on CD's. But to use CD's for storage, you have to have CD-RW drives on all the computers you use and the technology is only just starting to become common.
The drive is kind of noisy when it is operating. It makes a high-pitch squeeling noise when in operation. This drives me crazy when I am trying to work. Luckily, you can use iomegaware to make the drive "sleep" after it is inactive for X minutes (I have my drive set to sleep after I haven't used it for 1 minute. I hate the noise, and it only takes a couple secs to start up again when you want to use it.)
The biggest problem I have with the 250 MB drive is that the 250 disks can't be used with 100MB drives. My 250 drive can read both kinds of disks, but I can't use my 250 disks in both drives. This is really hard to figure out because the computers that I work with during the day are mostly equipped with 100 drives. I guess I'll have to buy a 100 disk, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a 250 drive.
Overall, I like this drive and would recommend it for storing programs, MP3's, digital photos, etc. If you got several disks, you could even use it as a hard drive!
