| dadadmin's Full Review: Canon i860 Photo Bubble Jet Printer 23/16ppm Print... |
Our Canon i550 began to have some problems with having to clean the ink tanks after the printer had sat overnight, so we went shopping. I liked the quality of the Canon printers, so I wasn't adverse to looking at another one. A salesman talked to us about the i860 in rather glowing terms, so I thought I'd give it a try.
We had a high volume (2500+) print job that needed to get done right away. The i860 installed right out of the box, updating the software applications that we already had on the computer with the other Canon. Within an hour we were up and running our copies. We were using 140 lb. card stock in the printer, and it pulled it through with no problems, with consistent alignment of an image that had tight boundaries with the pre-printed image from a printer shop. The speed was a bit faster than the i550 with about the same noise level (pretty quiet). The quality of graphics and text was great, no smearing and very crisp.
Our surprise came next in the quality of the photos that we printed, with the 4x6 photo holder in place to feed the photo paper. We had wanted to upgrade the photo quality from the i550, which printed OK, but not great. The i860 had an extra black ink tank for the photographic black color, which the salesman said helped in rendering the shadows better. The photo was stunning. We compared the same photo printed on the i550 to the one printed on the i860 (using the same type of paper) and the difference was significant.
Haven't figured out why the middle translucent plastic piece on the cover is there, other than a "style" type thing, but the brushed silver case is a nice touch. We hooked the i860 up to the parallel port on an XP with no problems. I suppose a USB cable would make it faster, but I have no complaints on the speed. The footprint is nice, it fit perfectly where it needed to go in the place where the i550 had sat.
