Re: Passat? (Reply to this comment)

tbone, you're not so new at this. Might be time to update your blurb.
As for the W8, as the guy said they stopped offering it in the U.S. following a dismal market response. And no third row. A redesigned Passat is coming this fall. No idea if the new wagon, when it arrives, will have this feature. Definitely no V8, as the car will once again have a transverse powertrain.

Passat? (Reply to this comment)
by tbone2k
Not sure if the Passat meets the reviewer's requirement of a third row of seats. At least, according to the VW website it doesn't. As for the W8, it must be rare because it isn't even listed on their site as an option.

v70 R Alternative: VW Passat W8 Wagon 6-spd (Reply to this comment)
by vtg68
Wrote an earlier epinion comment that's not yet published...if this is redundant, please ignore.
No doubt the R is incredible. Almost bought one! So close delivery was today.
That said, I had to go with the w8 wagon. It's more tractable around town, smoother, and just as finely appointed. Unfortunately, the VW dealer experience is as vacant as the Volvo dealerships' experience is fulfilling.
Yet the W8 is clearly the competition for the R and it does it with class and grace where the R offers essentially unbridled power. That's fine in a sports car, just not in a family wagon.
To see what I mean, take out an R and try to drive it at 60%. At 90% plus, the R is incredible, but in the real world, it's a heavy handed beast with a throttle response extremely difficult to modulate.
The W8 is nearly as quick but so oh so much more smooth. Easy fast and easy slow. And it isn't encumbered by the gizmos of the R which given Ford/Volvo, are sure to give trouble down the road.
So the W8 is a better car. That's quite a statement given the sheer competency and performance of the R!

V70 R Alternative: VW Passat W8 Wagon (Reply to this comment)
by vtg68
I'm a guy who became intoxicated with the R's power and luxury....darned near bought one. Heck, the dealer was awesome, the service level during ownership nearly unparalled (a huge upgrade vs. VW), and the car - wow, the car - is incredible.
That said, there is a real competitor and a better one in my mind, given that in two days I'll be an owner.
The car is the Passat W8 wagon 6-speed. Comes with a sport suspension that should be alot more reliable than the great but complicated gizmos in the R.
More than anything, the W8 is tractable. The R is hands down the best going 90 percent. But it can't compare to the W8 in the everyday use a wagon buyer will put it through.
The W8 is fast, comfortable, well-equiped and fun. I recommend all considering an R to explore any and all remaining W8's (6-speeds) out there and quick, 'cause there are only a handful left in the U.S. I did. And precious few will arrive on these shores before allocations to the U.S. are shut off.
I'll go so far as to say the W8 is a better car, period. And saying that in comparison to the R is quite a statement indeed.

Don't Forget Subaru (Reply to this comment)

The new Subaru Legacy with the WRX-esque 2.5l turbo should be coming out very soon. That's probably worth a look at well.

Outstanding Review... (Reply to this comment)

Outstanding review, thank you for taking the time to relate your personal experiences with the automobile; its just want one would want to make an intelligent, informed buying decision. For the record, I love manual transmissions, but find myself driving a car with an automatic. Smooth as it is, I miss my manual.

People who are looking to make an intelligent buying decision need this overdose of personal information, especially when they are possibly going to spend $50,000 on a product. Do you always rate reviews that have a lot of consumer info as less than very helpful?

Sorry (Reply to this comment)
by amyandtherain
Sorry but from a person coming in off the streets looking for car reviews this is an over kill. Reading this I found myself saying....okay okay enough...get to the point.
I am sure others will rate this very helpful so mine really won't even count.
