About Me: HI! I'm Rachel, a sophomore at Brandeis University.

Is Brandeis the school for YOU?

Written: Mar 12 '01 (Updated Apr 22 '01)
Pros:friendly students, manageable workload, near Boston, easy to get involved
Cons:limited classes due to size, limited housing due to higher matriculation
The Bottom Line: Definitely look into Brandeis University if you think you have the credentials to attend one of the top 40 ranked universities in this country.

For the most part, Brandeis University's students are quietly happy. There are few raging parties, no recognized fraternities or sororities, no rallies for the sports teams... But that certainly doesn't mean Brandeis is boring. If you are looking for a party school, this is not the place. However, if you just want to have fun without the alcohol, without the drugs and smoking and loud music, the Brandeis community is very supportive of someone like you. I dreaded going to college because I was afraid that since I didn't drink, I would be a social outcast. Fortunately, I made wonderful friends and felt comfortable here right away.
There are unlimited ways to get involved at Brandeis. If you have an interest in something for which a club does not yet exist, you can create it. If the club does exist, you can be as involved or uninvolved as you want, making it easy to be a part of many clubs on campus. The Theater community here is incredible. Several different groups put on entirely student directed, produced, and performed productions every semester.
Brandeis is a particularly good school for anyone interested in Theater, Pre-Med, Judaic Studies, Psychology, and even English. There is plenty of room to go for a double major or more. I plan to complete the Education Program and the English Major, for example.
One of the major advantages in applying to Brandeis is their extensive scholarship program. My advice is, if you know you want to go here and you are fairly confident that you will get in, DO NOT apply early decision. This will limit your chances at getting merit scholarships because they will have no need to entice you to go to Brandeis by offering free money. Besides generous financial aid packages, Brandeis offers merit scholarships to students they feel will do particularly well. I applied for no aid, but my acceptance letter came with a scholarship of $11,000 a year!
Students at Brandeis are generally very smart, but somewhat lazy. It is not a strenuous workload, unless you are Pre-Med, of course. The University's core requirements are very manageable and beneficial to a well-rounded education.
My only complaint is that there is limited housing for Juniors and Seniors. All freshmen and sophomores have guaranteed housing, but a small percentage of upperclassmen will be stuck finding an apartment in Waltham. It is likely that new housing will be built within the next few years.
