| el_coolo's Full Review: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for Sup... |
I've always been a big fan of Mario games so I decided to check this game out. Developed by Square and Nintendo and originally released on May 1st, 1996, this game has really impressed me, graphically wise, and with the interesting story and characters. The game really feels like a classic Mario adventure.
Story
Oh No! The princess has been captured by Bowser(again) and you start with Mario who ends up goes to Bowsers' castle to rescue her. Once you end up beating Bowser (the cinema is displayed quite comically) the whole place starts shaking and a giant sword crashes into the castle. Mario is kicked out of the castle, Bowser and Peach are scattered across the kingdom, and apparently some guy named Smithy is now the ruler of the mushroom kingdom and is creating havac over the entire world. Seven star soon fall from the sky and are scattered across the world. Mario now has to search for all seven stars to mend the 'star road'.
From then on its your basic RPG, the battle system (you go into the different battle screens and take turns fighting enemies), you go visit towns, and various people join your quest(ironically even Bowser, its quite funny).
Graphics
The graphics in this game are surprisingly (for SNES) done very well. All the character are very smooth textured as well as the the backgrounds. The characters faces are also done very well: you can really tell that mario is what he is supposed to look like 3D, and everything doesn't seen all that corny like in some games that have gone from 2D to 3D.
Sound
The sound is also very well done. The music has lots of classic tunes from the old mario games, and each place has its own different melody. The sound effects are pretty basic, (jumping, swimming, explosions).
Gameplay
As I mentioned earlier, its your basic RPG. Some things are different though like timed hits: just as you're about to hit a target press A and it will do more damage. Also there is also sort of a spell system: each of your pary has different specials (such as super jump or fireball)and each special reqires a certain amount of Flower Points or FP. The more powerful the special is, the more FP it will use.
Throughout the Mario wolrd their is tons of stuff you can do such as mini games, earn special items, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff. The controls are very easy and practically anyone can play.
Conclusion
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is an awesome RPG. It can be beaten somewhat quickly, but with all the secrets and hidden things, and humourous cut scenes, it should last a while.
