Pros:perfect weather, beautiful beaches, tons of activities, friendly staff
Cons:limited access to certain beaches and pools, should rent a car
The Bottom Line: This is the family vacation that will EVERYONE will love! Imagine that...
My family has gone to Palmas del Mar for our winter vacation for the past 10 years. There are many different places to stay within the resort, each with its own set facilities. However, the guards generally nod and smile, so we have managed to use the facilities (different pools, activities, jacuzzis, gym) at almost every part of the resort.
The place to be is the Candelero Hotel pool. It was recently re-done because of Hurricane George, so it is better than ever. A wonderful staff runs activities there for kids and adults alike all day long! Some of our favorites have been penny diving, pina-colada hunt, salsa lesson, beach volleyball, and water aerobics.
There is a van which will take you around the resort for free. Kids as young as 8 could probably go from pool to pool without supervision. I would suggest renting a car, however, because some of the sights outside Palmas del Mar are definitely worthwhile in Puerto Rico. On your trip you should definitely go to El Yunque Rain Forest. It is absolutely breathtaking with its lush plant life, gorgeous waterfalls, and walking trails through the foreset itself. You should also try visiting San Juan and Old San Juan to get a real flavor of the island. In the city we usually hit the touristy shops, a butterfly museum, Pigeon Park (pigeons land on your arm to eat from your hand!), and the Forts in Old San Juan.
At Palmas del Mar there is always something to do or nothing to do, depending on your mood. You can do everything from tennis to horseback riding, arts and crafts to just sitting at the pool with a pina-colada to sip. It is the perfect place for a family vacation because the variety of activities makes everyone happy!
