Pros: Side quests, challenge, great graphics and sound
Cons: Kiddy's not that good, too little Donkey and Diddy
The Bottom Line: Donkey Kong Country 3 is not as groundbreaking as DKC 1 and 2 but it's still a great game that almost any player would enjoy.

| brendan2's Full Review: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble... |
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble was one of the last Super Nintendo games to be released. It was a sequel to the popular Donkey Kong Country and DKC 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, and it is a good but not great ending to the series. I bought this game primarily because I was a fan of the other two and honestly, I was a bit disappointed. Because the second game was such an improvement over the first, I thought the third one would be even better but it's not. It is still a fun and challenging game though.
The Story
The story is basically DKC 2 redone. Instead of Donkey Kong being kidnapped (monkey-napped?), this time Donkey and Diddy are kidnapped. Dixie and a new Kong, Kiddy, must travel through different islands until they find and defeat the evil robot Kaos and its creator, Baron K. Roolenstein. The game features some new characters, in particular the Brothers Bear, and new things to find like banana coins and junk for Funky to fix. Story: 8/10
Graphics & Sound
The graphics for this game are very well done. Not much of a change from DKC 2, but still great to look at. Once again the heroes look very realistic, and the bosses are well designed. The animation is lifelike and the backgrounds, with amazing attention to detail, are the graphical highlight. The graphics for DKC 3 are easily some of the best the SNES has to offer. Sound is also quite good with everything from water rippling to bees buzzing to lightning crashing. The music fits the mood nicely and can be quite catchy. Graphics: 10/10; Sound: 9/10
Gameplay
Donkey Kong Country 3 features some new moves, new characters, and new challenges. The controls are easy to learn with the exception of Kiddy's Water Skip, which is a bit difficult to master. You can switch between Dixie and Kiddy at any time, and both characters have special moves. Kiddy has the ability to skip on water to reach high areas, and Dixie has her helicopter spin. Kiddy's attack is more powerful and he can crash through loose floorboards, and Dixie is faster and a better climber. Kiddy can curl up into a ball and roll while Dixie rides on top of him and Kiddy can throw Dixie into the air to reach places out of regular jumping range. Many Kong family members lend you a hand, including Wrinkly, who saves your game; Funky, who now fixes up old vehicles; Swanky, who lets you play games to earn Bear Coins; and Cranky, who competes against you in Swankys games. There are also some important new friends like a family of bears who offer information, items, and Banana Birds. When you find the Banana Birds scattered throughout the island, they will go to Wrinkly's cave. Getting all the birds and completing the bears quests will give you the best ending. There are some new animal friends in this game: Ellie the elephant, who can squirt water from her trunk and Parry the bird, who flies above you to reach high items. Familiar faces Squawks, Squitter and Enguarde are also back, but Rambi is noticeably absent. DK Coins are in this game, but you have to defeat an enemy called Koin to get to them. The Kremkoins of DKC 2 are now Bonus Coins, and you can find Bear Coins in many levels which are used to purchase things and to play Swanky's Bonus Bonanza. This game is different from the previous installments of the series because you can do much more on the world map. You can use a motorboat, hovercraft, turbo skis, or gyrocopter to get around, and you can find secret areas containing Banana Birds and even a secret world around some rocks. This game features a lot more variety than its predecessors, and it's fun to just wander around and explore. Gameplay: 10/10
While Donkey Kong Country 3 is not the best of the DKC series, it is still a challenging and fun game in its own right. This game is pretty underrated, but its really fun when you get into it. The side quests like the Banana Birds and Brothers Bear will keep you occupied for hours. DKC 3 is a good conclusion to the Donkey Kong Country series.
