A Clockwork Orange. This film is very dark, and I understand that Kubrick shouldn't dominate such a list, but this film is at least worth a mention. One of Kubrick's greatest films next to Dr. Strangelove, in my opinion.
Monty Python's Life of Brian. This movie has everything you would want in terms of the humor you know and love of Monty Python, but should make the list on account of remaining true to the dark theme throughout. May even bring regular comedy fans into our dark little world.
Little Shop of Horrors. Yes, this is a musical, but it is still an excellent flick and quite dark to boot! FEED ME!
But I very much like the list. I also didn't like election quite so much as many did, but it is definately true to the genre at the very least.
Thanks! :)

okay i can't say i have ever seen the whole thing of fargo or whatever but in my top choice i would have heathers because it's like mean girls gone bad mixed with a little bonnie and clyde and i mean a little but my point is heathers is one of the best black/dark comedies i have ever seen and if you get this movie you can't stop watching

I'm not sure that I would classify some of your selections as black comedies. I loved Fargo and Happiness. Happiness was soooooooo good. What about that one movie (help me I"m drawing a blank on the name) with Kate Winslet and this mousy brunette, their outcasts and best friends and the conspire to kill someone. It's based on a true story and turns out the brunette becomes this best selling author. The name has 'Angels' in it. That's black and that's goood.

and I too loved "Happiness", "Election" and "Fargo". "Fargo" being my favorite out of the bunch. I didn't like it the first time through, maybe it was just different than what I was expecting, but Marge and "Nerm" just cracked me up, and this is on my "to buy" list for sure.
I also loved "Welcome To The Dollhouse" - I thought it was classic, and I'm glad you gave it a mention.
Great review, great list, great topic.

Is "Fargo" a black comedy? (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
Surely not the estimable Ms. McDormand in it, and is "Slaughterhouse Five" (which I am one of the few other people to have liked) a "black comedy? For inept criminals, I'd suggest "The Ladykillers." (Free association quickly throws out another Guiness candidate: "Kind Hearts and Coronets.")
"Lolita" didn't make it because there was already one Kubrick film on your list?
"Yojimbo" and "The Third Man"... I know, I know: make my own list!

was a hilarious movie. I can agree with you on that one. I liked Fargo, but not as much as you or many others. As always, enjoyable reading.

Never saw Heathers... so will have to add this to an ever burgeoning list to see sometime in the future. Bonnie and Clyde is stretching the definition, but I decided to include it since there is a comic vein that runs through it... List is not meant to be THE definitive list... only a few of my favorites, realizing that I'd leave some off.
I thought of another set I should have mentioned -- Robert Altman material: would probably list The Player (since it's a deliberate satire on Hollywood) but Nashville also has some touches of dark humor.

I loved Fargo, too, most found it disturbing yet I laughed my butt off. Heathers would have been a nice addition... and how about American Beauty?

of some of these selections as comedies, particularly "Bonnie and Clyde", and you should be whapped on the head with a croquet mallet for leavnig off "Heathers", but nicely done anyway. I would certainly recommend all of these movies to anyone who asked, comedy or not.

I'd never have thought to include "Bonnie and Clyde," although your explanation makes sense. And you've made some excellent choices for the rest of your list. But "Election"? Except for the moment in which the younger sister gives her campaign speech, I kept wondering why so many people thought this movie was so good. I still wonder. If I see it again, it will be because of your recommendation. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing a few of your "Honorable Mentions." Thanks for the suggestions.
