| rabblebrowser's Full Review: Memorex 128MB Thumbdrive |
As a City College English teacher, I have seen too many of my students' essays and portfolios destroyed by bad floppys or damaged zip disks. They throw their disks into their backpacks, or put them in their back pockets and sit on them, or other daily disk disasters occur so that ultimately essays are lost forever...
We have trouble in computer lab getting students to save their documents properly to their particular program's specifications, or students have difficulty opening their files on new platforms or alternate program versions...
With a 1 1/2 year old and a full time job, my mind is on many things at once. How many times have I forgotten to bring my disk from home, or wanted to work at home, only to have left my zip disk sitting at my desk...
*******Enter the ThumbDrive.************
The size of a key, this lightweight memory device plugs into any usb port. It holds 128M - a little more than the Zip 100. (this version - others, more expensive, hold more, but I do not need that much memory for my word and image files.)
The ThumbDrive beats the zip disk for me because it has ZERO moving parts, which means 100% reliability. (OK, I can't prove that in a court of law, but that's what my research on the subject proved.) Floppys and Zips both have moving parts, which means that there is always a danger of damaging my disk. Perhaps there is a way to damage the ThumbDrive - (fire? water? ice? car tire?) - but in the everyday wear and tear of life, I find the ThumbDrive to be a much more reliable memory device.
Perhaps my favorite feature is the keyring attachment, keeping the ThumbDrive with me at all times: as long as I have my keys, I will always have my work with me.
The ThumbDrive is ideal for my students, who need to transfer files from their home computers to our writing lab at school and back again. Whether they are using Works (!), or Word or just Notebook, etc. the ThumbDrive has been a terrific, reliable memory device.
It certainly replaces the zips in my life. I can take my files from home to my school computer, into my classrooms and labs, and anywhere else I may go and my files are with me. Just think: I always have my screenplay handy in case I should run into Peter Jackson. (as long as he has his laptop with him...)
TRUE: the keyring attachment COULD be detached and the ThumbDrive lost from my keyring. However, so could my car alarm or my mailbox key. Although it is easy to detach, it is not so easy that it seems as though it could fall off on its own.
TRUE: it costs about $50-60, more than a Zip disk. But, its portability, cross-platform capability, reliability, as well as the sheer COOL-FACTOR of this nifty gadget, make it a real winner for me.
NOTE: I primarily use a mac, which means that there was NO INSTALLATION necessary to use the ThumbDrive. Another plus. I got one for my mother, who needs my help setting up the voicemail on her cell phone, and she finds the ThumbDrive EASY TO USE.
Why did I choose the Memorex ThumbDrive over other brands / similar products? Since they were the same price, I chose this one because ergonomically the ThumbDrive felt more comfortable to grasp.
THE ONLY DRAWBACK is that now I feel like my zip drive is practically useless. (But, hey - it's always good for making backups, right?)
