I have used 1-800 contacts for two years because their prices are better than those offered at my local vision stores on contacts. Plus, the convenience can't be beat.
PRODUCTS
The product line is pretty minimal - they carry contacts and some supplies for contacts including storing and washing solutions. Although the offerings seem minimal, they do carry most brands of contact lenses.
WEB SITE
Given that the product offerings are so limited - the web site is easy to surf and find what you are looking for. There are few images so pages load quickly.
ORDERING
Ordering is very easy but you must have your prescription handy. All of the information you need will be on your prescription. I simply had to choose the brand and type (daily, weekly, etc.). Then I had to enter the strength of the contacts. Finally, I had to enter my doctor's name and phone number.
You do not need to fax your prescription in. If you do choose to fax it in, at the end of the ordering process, you will get a handy fax cover sheet to print and a 1-800 number to send it to. I chose not to fax in my prescription. In that case, the company will call your doctor to verify your prescription. The site warns that it will take longer to process your order if you choose not to fax your prescription.
However, even though I did not fax my prescription, I got an email indicating my order shipped the day after I placed it. Maybe the contacts would have shipped a day earlier had I sent the fax, but the day didn't make a difference to me.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
I got an email acknowledging my order. I also got an email when my order shipped. My contacts shipped the day after I placed my order and arrived in five days.
PACKAGING
The contacts came in their own box from the manufacturer. Those boxes were placed inside the 1-800 contacts shipping box with no padding. They arrived in fine shape and I doubt contacts need extra padding.
SHIPPING COSTS
I have been using this company for two years and they have never charged me for shipping.
RETURNS
I have never made a return, however there is a label in the box that can be used for returns. Also, the shipping box is so sturdy, it could easily be reused to make a return.
STEALS AND DEALS
1-800 contacts offers discounts if you order more than two boxes. They also have sales on certain brands from time to time. Currently, they are offering a sale on Acuvue.
Currently, 1-800 contacts offers a 3% rebate through Upromise.com.
I found a coupon on the web for a free contact case. Since I have switched to dailies, I don't need a case. Also, on my previous orders for weekly lenses, I got a free case without a coupon code. The free case was the basic model that your eye doctor also probably hands out so, to me, it isn't worth the hassle to hunt down the coupon code.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I really like 1-800 contacts and have used them repeatedly. I find the service is reliable and fast. My order is always correct. Plus, their prices are great.
