I LOVE chocolate-covered cherries! I always have and I have no doubt, I always will :-)
THE FIRST SWEET TATSE
When I was very small, my Grandfather gave me my first one and I was hooked! A week later, I turned four and he gave me my own box ~ I was in heaven. After that, every year, he would give me a box for my birthday. These I would be rich with chocolates (for about a week) and able to torment my siblings with each and every sweet bite! It was wonderful :-)
My Grandfather passed on a month before my sister and I turned 14. When we went over to visit my Grandmother on Christmas Eve and I still remember how hard it was to enjoy the holiday without him. After we were all done opening our gifts she said, "Oh, I forgot this one" and she handed me a gift wrapped in birthday wrap. She told me that it was from my Grandpa ~ that he had bought it a couple of days before he had his heart attack. It was my box of chocolate-covered cherries.
The next year, my Grandmother bought them for me and when she passed on, my Mom took over. To this day, I still get a box of chocolate-covered cherries, from my Mom.
GROWING UP AND CHANGING TASTE
When I was small, I loved the cheap chocolate-covered cherries that are available every December for less than a buck. Heck, I've even seen them sell for 2 for a buck! But, as I got older, my taste changed, or developed, and they didn't have the same appeal they once did. :-( I soon found that I preferred cherry that were simply dipped in chocolate instead of the cordial types.
So, over the last 6 years, my Mom has bought me different brands chocolate-covered cherries from every company she could find that made them. This last December, she sent me a box of the most WONDERFUL tasting chocolate-covered cherries! After eating just one I knew she had found the ones I wanted to receive year after year!
EVERY TIME I USE THE BOX I WANT CHOCOLATE!
When I pulled out the box, I thought that she had paid to have it gift wrapped. There was this a sturdy round red box with a beautiful red satin ribbon tied around it. It looked really nice and the great thing is that the box is reusable and of course so is the ribbon. The box measures 7 3/4" x 1 3/4" so it isn't very tall in height.
But the REAL treat of course is inside! When I opened the box, it was filled with these wonderful chocolates. They are not all uniformed shaped like the boxes of the molded ones. This is because cherries are different sizes and since there is no fluid added, the chocolates are of course different sized as well.
These chocolate-covered cherries are just that ~ chocolate (dark) covered cherries ~ nothing more, nothing less. So, when you bite into it, you taste a small amount of dark chocolate, a lot of cherry (which is a bit tart) and then another small amount of chocolate. Ahhhhh such a wonderful combination of flavors!
The cherries are Amarena, and so they are not only somewhat sour but a bit chewy as well. The larger cherries, the more chewier they are. They are made by master chocolatier Christopher Norman if that means anything to anyone. All I know, is they are REALLY, REALLY good!
WHERE CAN I BUY THEM?
These chocolate-covered cherry are said to come Exclusively from RedEnvelope and they sell for $35.00 for the 1/2 pound box. There are quite a lot of candy in the 1/2 pound boxes, it isn't like you get a 5 or 6 of them!
Right now there are online coupons for FREE shipping (regularly $7.95) or 15% off at Red Envelope which helps a bit in the cost. Keep an eye out as they offers some wonderful coupons!
~~ ** ~~ ** ~~ 2BUZY'S FINAL THOUGHTS ~~ ** ~~ ** ~~
These chocolate-covered cherries! are really, really good! They come in a nice red box with matching satin ribbon. I gave mine to my daughter and she was keeping her gameboy cartridges in it. She had made a ceramic plate for her Grandmother for Valentine's Day and along with some pink tissue paper put it in the box. She then used her felt pens to draw some hearts and designs and added the red satin ribbon. Presto, a nice gift box her Grandmother will love :-)
When asked if I would recommend these to a friend, I had to think for a minute. They ARE expensive, but they aren't something you buy on a everyday basis ~ they are something you buy to give, to enjoy.
So, yes, $70 a pound is a lot to pay for chocolate but is $35 too much to spend on a SWEET gift for someone you care for?
