Pros:Cheaper than U-Haul - if you actually get a truck!
Cons:Absolutely no customer service, your deposit means nothing
The Bottom Line: I will never try to use Ryder again, and I do not recommend anyone to try their services because they might leave you high and dry!
When I had to move from Oklahoma to Oregon (about 2000 miles) I thoroughly researched all of the do-it-yourself moving companies in the area to get the best price. Ryder was the winner with price (about $750)- at about half the cost of U-Haul ($1500 for U-Haul).
Great! I reserved the truck for the specified time with a deposit, bought a plane ticket for my boyfriend (who scheduled the appropriate days off work for this trip) to help me move and I figured I was all set. Was I ever wrong!
The day arrived for me to pick up the truck and I found myself waiting outside the Ryder center for 2 hours (during normal business hours and without any sign indicating when they would be back) in the 110 degree Oklahoma heat. When the store employees finally arrived, they informed me that there was no truck available. They assured me that they were just about to call me (although before I left they asked me for my phone number in case a truck came in, hmmmmm....). At any rate I could get my refund back, but SORRY! They couldn't help me with a truck. I asked what the deposit was for if it did not guarantee a truck. Answer: to guarantee them that I will be renting the truck. WOW! This company seems to be really customer oriented.
Now what was I supposed to do now that we have no truck and my boyfriend had to be back at work in a couple of days?
Luckily, U-Haul was to the rescue with their abundance of available trucks. Even though I had spent so much time planning and researching the companies for the best price and putting a deposit down, I would up paying twice as much for the U-Haul truck last minute.
Ryder denied all responsibility for the mishap and would not compensate me for my troubles (i.e. reimburse part of the U-Haul fee for THEIR mess up).
If U-Haul had not been there for me, I am not sure how I would have moved but at the same time I was left penniless.
Perhaps this occurrence was isolated and perhaps it was the fault of the management of that one store and does not reflect on the usual Ryder service - but, after the I went through that day and Ryder not being cooperative at all (not to forget that your deposit means nothing) I will simply never try to use Ryder again.
