The Bottom Line Kids are not invincible and they need direction in life.
Isn't that a sad way to start off a story? Well, it got your attention. Now what do you do with it? I will tell you what the parents of this boy didn't do. They didn't LISTEN! His name is Orville. He is 19 years old. Lives 2 blocks away from me. He has 3 brothers and a little sister. This boy and his siblings were just little kids when I first met them. Normal kids with normal parents. Went to a normal school and had normal grades. Normal turned into these kids picking on other kids and other kids picking on these kids. Fights broke out between Orville and his siblings and my nieces and nephews. Even though they had been raised as best friends. I remember going to their house and TRYING to talk to their parents. They didn't listen to me. They said get away from my house, my kids are fine. I tried to explain to these people that their son, Orville, was hanging out with gang members. Nobody listened. One day, Orville was walking in front of my house and called my, then, 7 year old son a Mother ******. I never had problems with this boy until then. Him and my nieces and nephews would fight...but not MY kids.... So I chased him. I caught him. I talked to him. He seemed to understand and he apologized to me and came over to my house and apologized to my son. After that, Orville was a sweet kid again, even though he was 'trying' to be a gang member. When his sister and my niece got into a physical confrontation, they were both hurt, the police were called and of course, I am the one who tried to take care of it. My niece's mother wouldn't do anything. The police were there at Orville's house and so was my niece and I. We all talked and the police asked these 'parents' if they had a son named Orville, they said yes and the cop told them that Orville was getting into banging and it isn't a good thing because they just KNEW he was going down the wrong road. Did the parents listen to the cops? NOPE! They told the cops to either arrest their daughter or just leave. That was that. So, what happens April 6, 2001 at 1:00 a.m.??? (4 days ago).....2 blocks from home... Orville was shot in the face at close range twice. Fell down dead while his 2 brothers watched, his youngest brother holding him in his arms screaming until the ambulance and police arrived. And WHY!? I am not going to answer that rhetoric question. I will leave it that way because I don't want people thinking I am accusing the parents. What would you think and what would you have done had you been the parents of this boy who now has no life left? Orville was the victim of a violent attack from the opposing gang. He leaves behind a little sister, 2 little brothers, a big brother & parents who will think about their son every day and wish they would have done something more to help him. First, to handle bullies and teasers. Talk to the parents of the kids if it is a kid other than your own. If that doesn't work, talk to the bully. If that doesn't work, talk to the school, the principals, teachers etc...If that doesn't work, call the police. Now if it is YOUR child, talk to your child. Set limits and boundaries. If nothing else works, let that child hurt like they are hurting other people. I would try and show that child how he/she is making other people feel. (This would be my last resort) |
