LIDAR/Radar Detectors & Jammers (Reply to this comment)
by stlouisx50
- Never depend on a radar detector to give you ample time to react to a lidar shot. Lidar guns can get a reading in .04 seconds. Buy a Valentine 1, a Escort 8500 X50 and you can have the best Radar/Laser detection out there. To the cop that says he shoots for the windshield. This is not supposed to be done. Read your Lidar manual. If you get challanged in court you will lose your case! Also windshields are not as reflective as you might think. They are pretty transparent.
Now back to lidar jammers. There are a few out there that work and will not give false speed readings on a lidar gun. What it may do is show a jam code however there are always new and updated jammers comming out yearly that DO work. Check out www.radardetector.net to see more!

Radar jammers (Reply to this comment)
by macdaddy1225
I have a phantom radar jammer from rocky mountain and have not had a ticket in the 4 years I have had it. I usually do about 15 miles over the speed limit and the combination radar detector/jammer has always saved me. They have a deal that comes with it, for the first year you have it they will pay for any ticket you get as long as you are not doing more than 15 miles over the speed limit.I have used it from Texas to s.c. many times and have always picked the cops in time.

NOT SO TRUE (Reply to this comment)
by uncopa
I have been a cop for 10 years, using both radar and Laser.
I have never had 1 vehicle not show up on the screen, and most of the time I shoot for the windshield, its a VERY large reflective area,,,why shoot for plate when you have that.
I have heard from my uncle (truck driver) about jammers, he swears by them, but I dont know, like I said unless it shows a false speed, I never saw it work! Just so you know! If you know better I would be interested to know.

Very helpful review (Reply to this comment)
by ydeshm
I am considering buying a radar detector, after getting two tickets in two months, both in PA. This after 15 years of ticket-free driving!
I am confused by all the array of competing products out there. This review was very helpful in cutting through some of the clutter.
Thanks!

outstanding (Reply to this comment)
by scpagano
This review is outstanding and I plan to use it in shopping for a new detector. I have an old Whistler which has served me well for several years but is now obsolete except for situations where police are using equally ancient radar guns. I must warn you about Phillipsburg, Pa., a quaint and beautiful town, where streets converge in the center of town and there is a sign stating "right lane must turn right" The sign is partially obstructed by tree branches. Even if this were not the case, there are several confusing signs at the intersection that force the driver to think quickly to avoid a wrong turn so that he is likely to miss the right turn lane sign. I must add that I've only received 2 or 3 tickets in 40 years of driving.

Some good, useful info on radar detecting (Reply to this comment)
by kline
Good info on the latest police radar technology. I've also noticed these police cars employing the "instant on" laser units. Pretty much foils your chances of detecting radar in time to slow down!
So, good defensive driving becomes the real failsafe. For your usual stomping ground, the key is learning the terrain and usual spots that cops hide out in. There's about a two mile stretch of road where I live that gets "trapped" frequently, so I simply drive slower there. But bridges, highway median gaps, and blind curves with wide shoulders are very common cop radar spots.
About foiling lasers, I've heard that plastic license plate covers can help because of the curved surface. You just have to make sure you don't get one that is more than 10% tinted--illegal in most states. Using a nose mask or "bra" is a good idea... you just need to make sure you mount it tightly to avoid paint scratches, and to take it off in wet weather.

Radar Detector Usefulness (Reply to this comment)
by cchan006
I also live in the SF Bay Area like yourself, and have realized that because of varying terrains and heavy traffic, radar detectors aren't too useful. I have one, and I used it until it "caught" a police radar on Ka band. Knowing that it worked, it lost its "novelty value" and I stopped using it.
I agree that driving safely with the flow of traffic is best policy.

Not sure about the car bra though. My Dad was an Automotive High School Teacher and he told me they were not good for your car.

I wonder (Reply to this comment)

The Valentine One always wins the radar detector shoots-outs in the major car rags out there. I always wonder why the detector isn't bigger. I guess selling only direct is part of the reason why.

Nice Title (Reply to this comment)
by Lark729_89
I never knew about these transparent masks and sprays to cover up a detector's ability to read a license plate.
Massachusetts has plates with green lettering and red lettering... The green ones are from back in late 80's and anyone with a green plate doesn't need a front plate.
The more recent red lettering plates you need both plates and one will be ticketed if stopped and doesn't have 2 red-lettered plates.
This review is very interesting. I think it would really benefit my brother in FL to read this because he tends to have a heavy foot on the highway and city driving.

M.S. in Radar Detectors (Reply to this comment)
by Javelina
I learned so much from your review. I'm from NY, home of the "gotta-know-how-to-drive" people, and I'm going to school in PA. I was amazed that the people here don't have to have a plate on the front of their car- there either is none, or the owner has put on one of those decorator plates. I had a radar detector before I learned those little "tricks"- not to go more than a few extra miles an hour over the limit, travel in packs, etc. I also got sick of taking the detector down in CT, where I believe it is illegal.
Great review, I learned some helpful things!

Peter,
I appreciate the useful info in this review. Living in rural Alaska (like saying "Rural Siberia"...anyhow), we have only about four state troopers covering an area the size of West Virginia. "Town" is 48 miles away; Anchorage is 230. So I've got alot of real estate to cover when I'm heading there or back.
The thing that helps me the most is my volunteer fire department radio which scans frequencies and allows me to know where the cops are. My radar detector still helps though...
Thanks again,
Sam

Excellent Article (Reply to this comment)

Very informative and helpful. I appreciate the ending section about obeying the limit for everyone's safety...too many people don't pay attention to that anymore. However, on straight, flat roads, speeding can be the norm, as you said.

I find .... (Reply to this comment)
by PPerky1954
that it is much less expensive just not to speed. The cops allow 10 percent over the speed limit before they will stop you. I stay within that 10 percent and, like you said, go with the flow.

I am sick of, THE MAN KEEPIN ME DOWN!
Perhaps I should buy a jammer and a radar detector, and this time, actually pay attention to when it goes off.
Last ticket- $400
You were going pretty fast back there.
I was?
Yes, I got you going 80 in a 50mph zone.
Well officer, that's not fast.

I actually saw a car with a bra on it once. Couldn't tell if it was painted on there or what, but it went all the way across the front. And no doubt that those license plates are reflective; when I took pictures of my car, the flash reflected so bright on the plate that you couldn't read the numbers. Later~

which mentioned how an active jammer could be legal (although not very effective). I shall have to modify my standard reply when I get a secondary* radar dectector/jammer spam in my E-mail. Excellent review.
(By secondary, I mean it's forwarded to me by someone I really DO know, who (probably) already has my E-mail address, and my appreciate the information he's spreading spam.)
