| deadcoil's Full Review: Kyocera Mita Virgin Pay-As-You-Go Mobile Kyocera P... |
If you're anything like me, you don't have the pocket money or the ability to sign onto a cellular calling plan. Contracts broken cost a lot, and the various plans are usually geared toward jacking you the second you go over your minutes. Nights, weekends, mobile shared minutes... it all adds up to a pile of aggravation.
So I started looking into prepaid plans, but most of them were obscenely priced. The least I could find was $.25/minute? Why would I do that when I can just as easily go to a payphone?
I was browsing through Best Buy a year ago, and noticed that Virgin, you know, the music company? They'd gotten into the Prepaid Cellular act.
The salesman explained the cost to me, and I perked up. As per usual, a quarter per minute, but only for the first ten minutes per day. After that, 10 cents per minute.
I'm a writer, computer tech, and cartoonist. I spend very little time on the phone. So I took the plunge and got this Virgin Mobile doohickey.
It works. I maybe spend 60 bucks a month on it. All long distance is included, the phone holds a charge for days, and the service, although not crystal clear, is much better than other cell phones I've used. I haven't found a place I can't go with it, either - I take it on vacation to New Orleans or Reno, and the service and charges are the same.
I've only had to call customer service once, and aside from an extremely annoying initial VRU system, the live representative was extremely helpful.
The downsides? Well, sometimes my voicemail indicator takes a few hours to come on. I'm not entirely happy with the prices for the accessories, but many generic version of these things exist for much cheaper.
All in all, I'd say it's very much worth it.
