Pros: Long, thick cord. Professional look and feel. Stunning, accurate sound.
Cons: Not collapsable. Feel a little tight after a few hours.
The Bottom Line: A fuller, richer, more accurate sound than any headphones I've had before. This is a well-made product that I'll enjoy for a long, long time.
ibjolley's Full Review: Audio - Technica ATHM3X ATH-M3X DIGITAL MONITOR HE...
I have only ever had $20 headphones, but I listened to a friend's expensive pair and couldn't believe the difference. So after some reading, bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M30.
They have a professional, simple look to them, an impressive, sturdy 11-foot long(!) cord with an industrial-grade jack with a cool strain relief. It also comes with a screw-on 1/4" adapter that threads very smoothly onto the small jack. The cord for both ears enters the left earcup, so there's one less wire to snag. They're also fairly light.
The headband is an inch-wide steel band (as far as I can tell) that is wrapped in soft, padded leather. The headband is adjustable. However, after a few hours the headband' s firm grip starts to be uncomfortable. I don't know if they'll 'break-in' or if I'll just get used to it. They make it tight to keep the sound out (which it does well), but it might be too tight for some people. Also, the earcups swivel, but they aren't collapsable for travel or anything.
The sound is remarkable. They are so much better than anything I've had before, it makes me giggle. I don't profess to be an audiophile, but I am an avid listener and enjoy many types of music - rock, classical, jazz and folk among others, and these things make music sound clearer and more rich than anything I've had before. It is a notable improvement over my $20 headphones.
These are easily worth the extra $30 to someone who enjoys listening to music. I've heard details I've never noticed before in even some of my favorite songs with these things. I am very, very impressed.
